I want to put some of my DVD collection on my external hard drive for when i deploy. Ive heard of a DVD ripper to convert them . Is this legal ? Which DVD ripper is the best and is it a straight forward process ? I have 1 TB drive so i should be able to fit a good amount of movies !

Handbrake.

I was trying that, but I got no audio.

Haven't fooled with it much more.

Yes, Handbrake is good, plus you'll need a DVD decrypter to crack the encryption.

If you're a Mac user, download Handbrake and VLC Media player (contains decryption). For Windows, use Handbrake and DVD43.

I assume that any of these would work for ripping DVDs so they would work on an ipod/ipad/iphone too?

I want to go buy a new destop PC and my plan is to get a pair of 1TB hard drives setup in Raid 1 on it.  Then set it up as a media server to use airplay to send itunes video to our various iOS including apple TV.  I just have not had the time to research how to make it work.

Right now we run itunes off an older Dell Laptop but we have not been ripping DVDs as the hard drive just isn't large enough for that - it's 320 GB but videos eat memory big time so I was hoping to get a RAID protected desktop before we start ripping DVDs to the digital world so we can get them into iOS.

Make sure you go to the Audio tab and confirm that you have added at least one audio track.

Yes.

Specs of this computer:

HP EliteBook 8460w
Intel Core i7-2630QM CPU @ 2.00 GHZ
8 GB RAM
64-bit Operating System
Windows 7 Professional SP1

I also use it on an older 8510w with a Core 2 Duo T7700 with 4GB of ram and Win 7 Pro 64-bit.

Works very well.

ETA:  from their site

Runs on Windows
2000, XP, 2003, Vista, 7 and 8
32bit and 64bit
Currently no MAC version available

That sucks. Here's another way to do it for free:

AnyDVD to break the encryption.  I use Nero Recode to rip and compress the main movie.

It's really easy to use.  Put the DVD in the computer.  Launch the program.  Wait a minute or so while the program scans the DVD.  Pick the device you want from a list, or manually select the desired resolution from a drop down list, click go.  In a few minutes, the program creates a stand alone video file that you can save to a drive or put on a phone or tablet.

There's a ton of optional features, but I never play with them.  I use it to rip DVDs so I can put them on my tablet to take to the gym.
