One of my friends got screwed over last month.  In the process of trying to help someone that he thought was his friend.  Well here is what happined.  My friend let his friend crash on his couch for a couple of weeks till he got his own place.  The week before Christmas he came home from work and found just about everything gone.  He called the police they were able to recover everything.  They arrested the guy that was staying at his place.  Besides arresting him for stealing the items out of his place.  The reason it was easy for them to catch him was due to him being in custody already for stealing from Fry's and having dope on his person.  Today he got a call from a payday loan service about some loans that they said he had taken some loans out from them.  The loans were sent to a checking account that is not his.  He thinks the guy who he let stay on his couch and stole everything used his social security number for the loans since he cann't find his ss card along with his paystubs and other documents.

If anyone has any advice as to what my friend can do to help keep his credit from going down the tube let me know.

Sorry to hear about your friend.
Federal trade commission has a good website that tells you what to do in case of ID theft and also how to file a report.
Here is the link:

I wouldn't worry much about being held responsible for the money that the loser was able to borrow.... the damn money lending place obviously didn't get enough ID from the guy.

If that were me, I'd tell them to FOAD.
