I checked it out just now. This is AWESOME.

The thing I don't like about other "mobile payment" options, is that they always seem to require having your "customer" (random dude who wants to give you money for something) signing up for their service. It makes it a pain in the ass. All I've ever wanted, was an easy way (without a proper merchant account) to take credit cards. Side jobs, things I sell on craigslist, etc. Right now, the only easy way for two individuals to exchange more than a trivial amount of money is to either write a check, or withdraw cash. Either way, somebody's making a trip to the bank, and it sucks.

This sounds awesome.

Could be a nice alternative for me. I use PayPal Virtual Terminal at my office and it's $30/month plus a percentage based on $ amount of transaction. I can process payments on my phone now with the web interface but this seems a little slicker; and PayPal is anti-gun.

Not shabby.  I dig it.

I definitely could have used something like that back in high school when I did alot of odd jobs.

Would be even better if they could tie in to the store on my website so I could have everything in one place.

Nextel used to offer a phone with a card slider on it.

think the appeal to this is you don't need a merchant act .

so far most everything out there
a. ties in to your existing merchant acount..
or
b. signs you up for a new one.,, '

this is a " regular" persons way to get into the game...   then get out if its not for them with no fees/penalties for recurring monthly fees./ contracts

or maybe there is another way   but i just don't know about it,,   cause im a normal guy that was surfing engadget when i saw this,

Theres gonna be fees and strings and catches and shit, theres gotta be,

because merchants accounts are expensive and a pain in the ass in general...

but I'm very interested in this anyway.

There is no way in hell I would trust the security of any such device or app for that purpose.  I have VERY good info that mobile banking is extremely insecure.

Sure didn't.  I know a guy who is very high up in BofA's network security dept who strongly recommends against using mobile banking because of egregious security flaws.

Of course, I'm just some dude on the interwebz so you can do as you wish.  Just passing along the info.

The 'flaws' have to do with the security of the devices themselves, not necessarily the fact that they are mobile.

There are plenty of wireless terminals around, the issue I see with this is that without the ability to swipe cards you're paying mid qualified at best and non qualified at worst.  If you process more than 2k or so per month you're much better off finding a solution that lets you swipe a card

here are the rates,,

What are Square's rates?

Square's card processing rates are:

   * 2.75% + 15¢ for swiped transactions
   * 3.5% + 15¢ for keyed transactions

what are "normal" merchant acount rates..    not that im getting one anyway   since not having one is the reason for this service.

edit:

i always see add 3% for  CC transactions at gunshows..  so is it really that far off ?

In the ballpark for what my small business uses but my CC volume is low. Mostly personal checks and cash. On a really small CC transaction of ~$300 I'll get $290, which doesn't bother me. I really like the idea of accepting payment in the field for myself and my crews. I don't have the volume to get any real preferred rate as I suspect is the case for most applications for this.

OK I just signed up and it starts with a $100 transaction limit and $700 a week until they run a credit check on you. Seems sketchy as even though I have great credit MY credit doesn't matter, its the credit of the persons card I wold be swiping that is of interest but I guess this is their way of screening and a little bit of weeding out the garbage; we'll see. The card reader is free but they make it sound like it could be awhile before I see it arrive.

It will be basically useless for me until they run a credit check as my average CC user will charge between $450 and $2000 a pop. Oh well, got the ball rolling so we will see.
