So I have several sets of wrenches that are craftsman.
I was lookin for a 11mm 12 point polished wrench to match this one set. Mine has the size CRAFTSMAN and USA on side, the other side a model number (professional) and the size.

Looked all around then called sears.
They said they have it but dont say USA and nothin anywhere on it says PROFESSIONAL on it.

A guy (another worker) that must of over herd rhe guy helpin me told him they haven't made the professional model for about 11 years.

Its just a damn shame how this country is goin to shit in so many fuckin ways.

So I guess if any of my shit breaks and I returned it, Im gettin chinese fuckin crap with the craftsman name on it.

Craftsman hasn't been made in the USA for quite a while. This country is coming back. Don't be a defeatist because Sears outsourced Craftsman.

Stanley bought the name. I had hopes they would turn it into a premium USA made line. If they don't do it soon they will lose big.

I stopped buying Craftsman and buy nothing by snap-on now. Over priced? yep but it makes my point. (or makes me feel like it makes my point. )

I keep hearing rumors that they are moving production back to the US but that's all it has been so far.

Have you been living under a rock, OP? Craftsman hasn't been made in the US in probably 13-14 years.

Why pay for the Craftsman name if all you get is mediocre Chinese quality? Just buy Harbor Fraught instead.

Craftsman tools went hecho in china some years ago. Now that they have been bought by Stanly Black and Decker, the tools are destined to come back to USA manufacture. Or so says the rumor that I have heard.

Look at Pittsburgh pro at harbor freight. For the money, they are way better than they have any right to be.

I've got 2 sets of craftsman metric and sae wrenches. One is older and says made in USA and the other was made in China I guess.

I only use the China made ones and my USA ones hang on pegs where I can see them.  Kinda like looking at them from time to time as I know they can't be replaced.

S-K Tools is decent for mid tier hand tools. US made. Going to be pricier than Craftsman though.

Amazon Product
  • 15-piece metric combination wrench set stands up to harsh working environments
  • Patented SuperKrome finish for durability and maximum corrosion resistance
  • SureGrip hex design drives the side of the fastener, not the corner

Ebay otherwise if you're looking for tools to match your set.

Craftsmen used to make good stuff and had a no bullshit warantee . break it , return it and get another the same or similar.

Their stuff is made in different places (I could overlook that) and isn't as high quality (guess I am more of less forcd to live with that).

Sears (Kmart, whatever) is folding up stores left and right so there is no easy way to get to one to swap out a tool for a even crappier one . This I can't live with.

My tool money for the most part goes to Home Depot with a smaller part to Lowes. Pretty decent stuff and a total no bullshit return policy at any one of several stores that I am near to.

Some time back I was working at home depot in the hardware/tool department and I questioned the manager why he told me to more or less let anyone return any Husky hand tool for any reason with pretty much whatever would make the customer happy.

The manager put it this way.  How many tools have you swapped out in the past month to make customers happy and how much did that cost Home Depot compared to the pile of stuff the dirtbags stole in the same time period?  The cost in my department would have been something like 1000 to 1 (theft compared to warrantee)

Imagine that -a company who takes the position their best position is to make the customer happy so he will return

*Disclaimer*   I can only speak to my own experiences, so don't take what I say here too far.

I can say that a lot of it comes down to price point.  Most company's products are going to be made in China because making things in America brings the price point above what your common consumer is willing to pay.

Where I'm currently working, the deal is much the same, but I'm finding out that the Chinese factories are willing to do a lot more and take more risk with injected parts than US producers are.  In short, the Chinese manufacturers have more of a "yes, we can do that" attitude and the American manufacturers will have more demands and rules for how they want your parts made.  I'm talking about draft angles, shut-off's, etc.  There are other factors that help with that, but I'm trying to keep this post short.

Not sure I'd call those "mid tier". I have had a 19 piece set of the long polished SK wrenches for the past 22 years and they have always served me well.

If any of your shit breaks - get the new replacement - sell it on ebay, and buy a used one from the line you're using.

We've become a country of 'give me the lowest cost item, because they all look the same to me' purchasers, and that leads to suppliers shrugging and selling cheap shit to be competitive with the other guys selling cheap shit.

Just remember that when S-K came back from bankruptcy : They declared that all tools manufactured/warranted under the previous plan were owned outright by the original tool purchaser and that all existing warranties on those tools were declared null/void.

I had no reason to trust them after that.
I still love my Daddy's old Craftsman tools, and I use them all the time, but I don't trust new Craftsman stuff and only buy the old stuff on Ebay when I find stuff that fills gaps in my (Snap-On) roll-around.

Same thing with Penn Reels. Except for one model, closed down their factory in Philadelphia and moved their shit to China or somewhere.
Personally id WAY rather pay an extra $20-$50 to have it made and assembled in USA.   Same with high end Van Staal reels.  Come on!

So what I'm reading is the Chinese made tools work just as good for actual tool usage and the US vintage should be used for decoration.

Funny this thread came up. How old is your wrench? I went to Sears last night looking to replace my 10mm wrench.  I bought it but when reaching home and putting it in the wrench stand it seemed tight. At first I thought it was thicker? Closer inspection I noticed a small angle on one end.  Over time somethings change I guess?
