To the supervisors on the forum.....who often gives them out and takes care of your people???
To the gunts (I mean that with all respect bro's, any police agency is worthless with out good grunts) what agencies give them out because they are well deserved?? I'm a sup, I give them out when they are warranted for outstanding performance (ie good investigation) or outstanding performance in a high stress incident. (please remember to nominate your people for awards too if they deserve them and tell them. My local paper and agency nominated me for officer of the year (didn't win) but the way I found out is the ladies at the Post Office saw it in the paper) |
| Never done in my agency. The most you'll ever see is a copy of a citizen atta-boy letter with a short note from the boss at the top or bottom. The old Undersheriff was far better about actually writing out a letter specifying good performance, but its never been an actual counseling statement format. |

Someone tells cops "good job" ? ? ? ? ! ! ! !
my Sgt and Corp tell us, as far as the dept acknowledging anything, NoPE. I did have a LT tell me and the whole shift right before we were about to hit the streets that a cop's tape her reviewed should just be shot for driving around vehicles while going code and driving over curbs. Said the Ofc should be shot 6 times in his talk with us. [>:/] WTF |

I write letters of commendation for my troops when they do a good job.
Too often the bad stuff gets noted and the good stuff gets ignored. They get read at our officers meetings and go in the file. I figure the "attaboys" balance the "aw shit" letters that we all get. |

We have these little forms that we get, their not disciplinary according to managment, their just held in your file for a year and used on your next review (how that's not disciplinary I have no idea). Anyhow, they can be used for good or bad things. They have no problem throwing paper at us for bad things, but they just mention in passing when we do a good job. Of course. ![]() |

I got one recently....a Det. gave it to me because I gave all the credit for a felony wrnt capture to an officer from the previous watch, who had told me that the suspect had fled a location earlier in the day.
Of course, I went there and found he had returned...but it wouldn't have occured to me to look there if he hadn't gave me the information. She emailed me that she was impressed that I would do that, give the other officer credit. I responded that I have a quote hanging in my locker, "There is no limit to what a man can do or where he can go, if he doesn't care who gets the credit." The act of giving credit to the other officer, and presumably, someone in our dept. didn't care only about promoting themselves, was so astounding to the detective that she sent a letter of commendation to my capt.. (dude tried to cut his g.f. neck open to kill her....it's his third strike.) |
