I have been having trouble with my desktop and decided to just buy a new hard drive and reinstall windows. Well I am trying to do that and windows recognizes the HD when I begin the install b/c it shows as a partition, however when it comes to the first reboot in the installation it does not recognize the hard drive. It tries to boot from floppy and then cd and tells me to reboot and select proper boot device, but then it does not act like it recgnizes the new hard drive b/c it does not give me the option to select it. Any help would be appreciated, the desktop has been down for weeks now and I have been working on it as I have time, but it is really starting to get frustrating.

Sorry for your troubles.  I went through enough PC issues between my own and family members since I am the 'computer guy' in the family.

Switched to Macs 2 years ago and haven't looked back since.

Check the drive jumper settings.  Most drives come set to the slave configuration as most people will be installing them as a secondary drive.

I looked in the instruction book w/ the drive and it says to leave the jumpers off if it is the only hard drive in the system, which it is, so I took the jumper off.

Try resetting the bios to default settings.
This is a IDE hard drive and not SATA correct?

Make sure the BIOS is set to autodetect and that you have the drive on the primary controller cable.

If it is the only drive it should be (CS) Cable select,, some older boards require it set to master
ETA Set your bios to boot to hard disk and no other peripherals.. 1st boot hd second boot hd no 3rd boot device

Awesome!! That took care of it for now. It is continuing the windows installation. Thanks

one question though. Can I later add another hard drive as a slave and put the jumper in this one as master and it not mess anything up?

It shouldn't be a problem.
Glad it worked for you. Usually my suggestions are always wrong. I was waiting for you to come back and say your computer blew up after doing what I suggested.
