If I stop my USB drive and take it out of the computer it will not start up again until the computer is turned off and turned on again. It's like the computer does not see it. How do you tell the computer to restart the USB drive when it does not show up in the drive list in "my computer".

When you say you stop the drive, are you using "Safely remove hardware"?

it's an issue with your windows installation, what version of windows are you running?  Yeah if you restart it will probably see it.

I usually never do the safely remove hardware thing, as long as your not working on the disk and/or copying pasting onto or off of it, you can yank it out.  Done this for years at work and never had an issue.

could also be drivers for you motherboard where I'm assuming the USB slots are built into.

I don't think there is a way without removing it and putting it back in. When you stop it you are telling the pc you are going to remove it.

Nevermind......RIF

Right. I click "safely remove hardware" and take it out of the computer. Then if I plug it back in again the computer ignores it. No "F" drive or "removable drive" show up in the drive list. If I turn the computer off and back on again then the computer sees the drive again.

Vista. It's a new computer.

I have so many USB's now I broke down and got a USB Hub.  You can connect 7 USB drives to it, works every time so far.

Get the Sandisk U3 Smart USB's they have a launch program built in that will boot it up when you put it in the slot. Puts a nice icon on the screen to open and eject  the drive.

I would bet 10 to 1 that you have a store-bought computer. This is a common problem with pre-built PC's.

You should not need to do the "safely remove hardware" thing, if the drive isn't in use, you should be able to plug and unplug it anytime you want without doing anything. That's what USB is supposed to allow.

You can go to "add new hardware" but that will probably not work.

Whatever you got, go forth and look for the newest motherboard drivers.

It's good practice to unmount filesystems before they are removed.  Simply unplugging them is the same as hitting the power switch on a running computer.
