Ok so I have the family computer that the kids use and it is slower than a dead turtle. So what I am looking to do is get the thing back to its normal running state. I know the registry needs to be cleaned and that there are probably a ton of junk files on it as well. I have done a disk cleanup and a defrag but I think it needs more than that. So could one or more of you guys recommend a good clean and tune program that is free? Thanks in advance for any advice or help

Back up any important files and reformat it.

The fastest, most efficient option is to back up your files (documents, pictures, music, etc) and then reimage the PC from scratch. If you have the original disks, just do a full system recovery, format the hard drive, reinstall everything from scratch.

After all is said and done it will take about the same amount of time and the file system will be as clean as you can get it.

Once everything is totally rebuilt, make sure to download the latest updates / patches / etc

The registry doesn't need to be cleaned. If you don't have malware or a virus then you have a bottle neck somewhere. Determine the root cause of the issue and fix that. Don't just go download some "cleaner" and hope it'll fix anything. It won't and that's if it doesn't actually break the PC.

Try this, download Malwarebytes, run it in safe mode and see what it says.

Out of curiosity, what operating system is it?

The other posters have nailed it - start over.

My daughter could kill a PC in less than an hour when she was 13, just by getting on the web.

Then my professional opinion stands. Had you said Vista I would have told you to wipe it and install W7.

You could try pressing cntrl-alt-delete and look at task manager to see what all is running.  If you have miltiple antivirus stuff running at the same time or not set properly, that can slow things waayyy down.

Well, there's your problem.  Reformat and install Kubuntu.

Meh, Ubuntu is just fine, posting from it right now. Which isn't to say anything negative about Kbuntu.

I was never a Linux guy until I said "screw it" and just installed it as my only OS.

I haven't looked back.
