Does this mean the monitor is fried?  Turn on computer--computer is booting up--turn on monitor--hear montior start to turn---monitor then turns off.  So the computer is able to boot but the monitor continues to turn itself off.  What's wrong?

Swap it with another, see if it fixes it.

Swap power cords also.

english a second language?

j/k.... i am getting that the pc boots properly bu the monitor powers off?

does it go into standby..amber light or just turn off?

if it goes to standby then first suspect the video card. try reseating it.

if it powers off check the power switch on the monitor and see if it is engageing properly. if so.... probobly a monitor issue.

if you have another pc or paltop handy try it out to verify the monitor.

Wait till the computer is fully booted.  See if when you turn the monitor on it goes on the kinda like a camera flash.  Thats what just happened to mine.  Costco $100 bucks for a 17 inch.  Not a bad price.

If you hear noise from your monitor when you power up then you need a new monitor.

Yep.

Yeah, the light goes from green to amber.

How the hell do you do that?

if you have another pc or paltop handy try it out to verify the monitor.

She's coming by to pick up my CRT.  But I bet it's her monitor

if the light is going to amber it is likely NOT the crt. Check the cableing to the video card on the pc.

The monitor is NOT getting a signal from the pc most likely. Video cards fail far more often than crts.

power off the pc and remove the side cover. look at where the video cable from the display plugs into the system. if it is attached to a add in video baord remove the cable and screw pull it out and reseat it.

If the cable is attached to a port directly attached to the system board, the video circuit on the mother board is dead. Replace the board or add in a video card.

I just bought a used PC with a 17" flat-screen monitor that I won't be using. It's an E-machines monitor, and works fine. Anybody that wants it, simply pay for shipping. (might take me a few days to find proper packaging, though)

Edit: tc6969 got it.

My monitor died a while back.  Had to go get another one it sucked.  Anyway I never could figure out what went wrong with it so I'll ask here.

It was a CRT

Computer boots fine.

Press monitor power button = The degauss click then nothing,  no power light

Press it again nothing
repeat several times

finally the degauss click happens again still the monitor remains off.

So what the heck happend?

Just wanted to let you know that it was the video card.  I installed a 64mb ATI Radeon card and now everything is working great.  Thanks for the help!

glad to hear it's fixed.

on another note

i lost a video board this week in mine and last night my wife 20"crt died thanks to alabama power bouncing the power grid 5-6 times in a hour.

i feel your pain.

Man, what's going on?  My 17" Phillips CRT is making "popping" noise, which then causes the image to get blurry.  I think my CRT is gonna die!

sounds like it. are you sure it not just changing resolutions? that will also make a clicking/popping noise.

Make sure you don’t have the refresh rate of the video card set to high for your monitor that can cause the popping and can break a monitor. I know this from destroying on monitor by setting the refresh rate to high for it.

Don't jump the gun, if the lights not coming on at all it sometime may need to be discharged.

Just unplug it from the power source for a few minutes, and try again.

If it still doesn't come on, new monitor time.

Supercheap now that flatpanels have rearranged the demand.

NM, it was the card I see.

I'm not doing a thing.  The CRT is doing all of it on its own.

Well, guess what now?  Her computer is doing the same thing as before!  The green light on the monitor's power monitor turns on, but then goes to amber.  What gives?

Monitors at power on go green. once the electronics are up they check for an input signal. if nothing is there they go amber/standby.

1st... verify monitor is good. check with another pc or laptop.

2nd... verify video has output <another monitor>

if pc works but still no display on old monitor check video cable for damage or replace old display.

if monitor works but not pc.....

reseat video card
verify bios is set for agp video<if bios has been reset vga/pci may be the default>
verify good power

if that doesn't work test video card in new pc.

if card works suspect system board or power supply.
if card is dead.... suspect card. since the card has been replaced i'd consider a system board and or power supply as well. <one or the other could be causing card to fail.>

hope this helps
