All depends what services and programs are running in the background.

At this moment I'm running 43.

That's a very open-ended question.

Just "end task" on random ones, if your computer keeps running then it wasn't necessary and you can check off the list.

Way too many variables to answer that question in any way.

in XP: go to start ––-> Run––––>type in msconfig.

Go to the startup tab.

This lists all the programs that start when the computer boots up. It also lists where the program is on your computer. If it is in your windows folder, don't mess with it! Same for processes in your documents and settings folder. If it's in your program files folder, odds are you can stop it. Just be careful: you can really screw up your computer, if you stop a vital bit of programming from loading at startup. If you aren't certain what a process does, DON'T stop it!

Don't inadvertently disable your antivirus software!

I disabled several programs, and my XP computer boots up significantly faster. My printer software was loading at bootup, and running in the background, sucking up CPU and RAM resources. There was an 'update' program' running for google (probably part of Google Chrome), for Roxio (CD and DVD burner software) and Open Office, too.

The more things like that you can get to not load at start up, the faster your computer will boot up, and your computer will run faster, since less crap is running in the background.

Your question is akin to "how bad does a tattoo hurt?"

The guy above you gave a pretty good answer.

And you can always do like the IT pros and throw a program you don't know what the heck it is into Google.

Yes and no. It boils down to "do you know what needs to be running (or what you would prefer to be running) and what does not?" If you can't answer that question then, msconfig isn't much help. Particularly since a great many processes aren't intuitively named. So, yeah, you can go play around in msconfig and turn stuff off. The orginal question, however, was "do I need all of these processes?" Which, honestly, is like asking "how much does a tattoo hurt?"

Nothing always helps.  But it works frequently enough.

41 processes is not bad.  I run my desktop pretty bare with XP and I have maybe 40-50 individual processes going.  Of course, I have AV running, and I'm ripping a DVD right now...

Honestly? Install Ubuntu Linux... I promise it will breathe life back into it.

It's free and easy to install
