I need to set up a small church network that would consist of 1 desktop computer, 1 all in one printer(that can be wireless)  and a couple of laptops, that are wireless.

I have no internet access to connect a router to.

I could access the internet by teathering my laptop to my blackberry, but the network needs to be able to run without my laptop being present 99% of the time.  Mainly just want to be able to use the printer on all computers.

I'd appericate any help. - Thanks

Well you're going to need a switch and a WAP (wireless access point).  This can all be accomplished by a router now a days.  And you mentioned you have no internet access to connect a router to, this isn't important.  You don't need an active internet connection to use a router.  You're just interested in the switching and wireless capability.  If you ever wanted to add internet then you just connect your cable to the WAN port and you're good to go.

Get a router, if you need specific brands let me know, and just connect the computers that need ethernet into it and your laptops will connect to the wireless.  Depending on the size of the space you're trying to cover with wireless will determine the type of wireless (n for large area, g for smaller area).

So what's your question?

I have been told by all the "big-box" stores, that I can't use a router without connecting to the internet.

You actually don't need a router if there's not an internet connection and everything is local.  Although you could just use a wireless router and just connect everything to the LAN connections.

Well you're store was partially correct.

You're router might not work, depending on the manufacturer, because it may cause problems with the DHCP and it not assigning IP addresses.  You might have to set them manually.  This isn't really a problem though because you can set them in 10 seconds under the TCP/IP settings.

The only reason I suggested the router was because it integrates the WAP into the switch since you wanted to connect wirelessly.

That's bull.

They work just fine in LAN settings.
