So, I seem to have gotten some sort of virus or spyware on my laptop.  Every time I use google or yahoo search engines and click on one of the search results it takes me to an advertisement page and not to the "results" page.  I've ran adaware, spybot and a free virus checker with no luck.  What do I do now?

And nope, it didn't come from porn sites, this laptop has never been used for that

Re-boot in Safe Mode and do a System Restore to a point before this started happening.

When clean, run an AV program, an anti-Malware program and delete your temporary internet files.

You should be good as new.

Thanks Mech2007 but I tried and there were no restore points available, it's a fairly new laptop.  In the past Ad-Aware and Spybot have worked great.

Any other ideas?

Unfortunately, the only other way I know is to reinstall your browser, or possibly even change to a different one.

Before you do that, try rebooting in Safe Mode, deleting your temporary internet files (Tools>Delete Browsing History>Delete Files) and then running your AV (I use MS Security Essentials) and Malware (I use Malware Bytes). You have nothing to lose.

Good luck.

Download and try this.  Hitman Pro ...It is pretty good at killing redirectors. http://surfright.nl and it is free for 30 days and well worth the small amount they ask for beyond that.

First download, install, update, and then run Malwayrebytes and let it remove any nasties it finds. Reboot into safe mode and run it again.
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php

Next run an online antivirus scanner like ESET. Some malware will change your installed anti virus software so it ignores the malware.

Next check your firewall to ensure it hasn't been reconfigured to allow the malware internet access. Most firewall programs have a section to allow or block programs from accessing the internet.

Finally if your computer is so infected that even the above programs cannot clean it you have two last resort options. First is to do a reformat of the hard drive and reinstall all the software and operating system. This is the only way ot be 100% sure that the infection if completely gone. Restoring from a backup is not a guarantee that you've gotten rid of the infection since the backup could contain the infection. The second last resort option is to run ComboFix. ComboFix may take hours to inspect and clean the infections it finds.
