My fiancee's computer is a 1.8MHz Dell, i'm picking up an extra either 512 or 1Gb of PC2700 for it today to add to its 256 that it came with.  My question is that it has onboard video and I was wondering if adding a vid card to a computer that has onboard video is possible.  Nothing fancy, just a cheap 128mb card or something, either ATI or Gforce.

Depends if it has a 4X AGP slot, Other than that there really isn't a decent PCI card anymore.

Check to make sure it has an AGP slot. Also make sure its not using one of those skinny cases.

Model and serial # would help.

More than likely it will only have a PCI slot, but regarless its going to be a waste of money to do any upgrades to a comp that old.  You would be better off saving a putting down $400 on a dell or something else with 3 ghz.  I would leave it alone and save for another if she wants, as any money you put into something that old will be virtually wasted and you will see  very little performance increase.

It would also be good to know the purpose for your wanting to expand?

The computer is a Dell 4600S, i'm not at home right now to open it up and look in the case to see what kind of slot it has, but I had assumed it was a PCI slot.  I don't know how to tell by looking at them whether they are 4x AGP or PCI or PCI-E or anything else for that matter.

Never heard of a Dell 4600S but the Dell 4600/4600C has an APG slot… I suggest a GeForce 6600 it is a good card plenty fast enough for that CPU anything more would be a waste. NewEgg has them for less than $100
