I just a got a call from 'foreign technical assistance' guy telling me they are getting numerous malfunctions

and error messages from my computer and are going to 'help' me fix it.

Eventually, they then ask you to download crap and charge you for the privilege.

Beware.

I knew it was a scam from the start but I just played along enough to figure out what was happening.

They ask you to Run eventvrw which will show you error messages/logs.

Then claim they will fix if you download something which you know is a virus.

Then charge you for this 'service'.

Gotta watch computer scams.  I saw one yesterday where they were trying to get $950 out of you for 5 gold stars that will pop up on your computer screen when you log onto some web site.

What is sad is people still fall for stupid shit like that. Common sense tells you that no one is going to know your computer is giving errors but you. I work in the HelpDesk and see "common sense" has been all but lost these days.

This new Windows that came on this laptop I just got seems to be some kind of computer scam too. What happened to the regular start menu? Now I have these apeshit boxes flying everywhere.

I will download anything from work! It is the best way to find out if something is OK!

That's OK.  I got a call from the "IRS Criminal Investigations Divison" that I owed back taxes and would have a warrant issued for my arrest if I didn't pay.  Area code was even from DC.

Apparently, this is an ongoing scam whereby they threaten you and ask for prepaid credit cards to make tax payments........From a VOIP Call center in India with fake caller ID

I told them, I'm home, serve it.

That scam would be slightly more believable if they said they were from the NSA.
