So my friend burnt me a DVD with some files on it.  I put it in the DVD drive, and it says that the disc is empty.  I've tried two different DVD drives, one IDE, one SATA, but I get the same result each time.  Both the DVD drives I tried will read other DVDs.  My friend made sure that the files actually did go onto the DVD.  Any suggestions?

Does your dvd drive/cd drrive read the type of disc it is? What burn/transfer program did he use? Encrypted files?

Can you see the ring on the burnable side of the dvd?

It sounds like he either mixed up the discs or it's a bad burn.

My friend gave me the actual drive he burned the disc with, that's the SATA drive I tried.  I can see the ring on the other side.

some DVD burners dont read some burned disks, and some burning software sucks and doesnt work on some burners, and some CD-R's suck and dont work some some drives, and some drives dont read +R's, and some drives dont read -R's

Yep.  This is what comes up when I put the DVD in.

either it was a bad burn or he used some software (like roxio) which kept the session open using a non-standard format and never closed the disc, and since you don't have said software you can't see what is on it.

hmm...well windows supports that.BUT you have to tell it to actually burn the disc. (It shows 'ghost' files there but they aren't actually burnt yet.)

also if he has roxio installed it probably used their proprietary UDF format. Which windows cant read. (There probably is drag to disc drivers somewhere) I'm not sure about Nero's inCD (same thing different brand), I just know Roxio wasn't writing standard UDF for a long time.

Can you see a ring where info is burned on the disc? (The color of the disc will be slightly off from the rest (info is burned from center to edge so the less stuff that is on there the closer said ring is going to be to the center)

Yes, I can see the ring.  He says he doesn't have roxio or Nero isntalled.

Ok, I go to burn the disc, I get the options to continue the disc or ignore previous sessions.  I choose continue the disc and then I get an error saying invalid UDF tag.  Apparently my friend has ImgBurn as his default burner.  Should I try and do the same thing with that program?

on his PC install CDburnerXP
Open CD burner XP
put new CD-R in drive
use CDBurnerXP to find the files you want
click burn
wait
eject
done

That's because you don't have a DVD drive on your PC - it's a CD drive.  It says right there, "CD Drive (E:)."  If you are absolutely sure the drive is a DVD, then your PC is not recognizing it as one.  Until it does your computer will never read the DVD.

Put the disk back into his drive and finalize the disk.
