My Toshiba Satellite laptop is acting up a bit. I'm not sure exactly what is wrong but I seem to be missing a few program files (or fragments of the files) here and there.

Whenever I restart my laptop, I get a few notifications that pop up saying "Can't find xyz.file for BHO" and the like. If needed I can restart and type out these missing files. I had a re-direct virus awhile back that I got rid of (thanks, Hive) and, while no major issues have surfaced, these warnings are a little annoying.

The laptop seems to be running a little slower than normal, as well.

From time to time I get the ever-annoying "Internet Explorer is not responding" bit. It'll go away on it's own after 10-15 seconds. It seems to happen at random but it happens every time for sure if someone initiates chat with me on Facebook. IE freezes for 20-60 seconds in that case.

What general purpose diagnostics/system checks can I perform to help isolate the issues, remove the remaining fragmented files/programs, improve performance speed, etc?

Somehow an annoying Norton diagnostic tool made it's way onto my computer, as well. I'm running Webroot Spy Sweeper and Trend Micro Antivirus.

Basically I just need some help cleaning things up and improving performance. I'm savvy enough to know what I do not know, so here we are.

Help me, Arfcom. You're my only hope.

It sounds like you have some corrupt startup files there.

Without knowing exactly what messages are coming up, I'd re-install the operating system from scratch.

Back everything first, though.

Yep.  Backup, format and reinstall.

First and foremost

Get rid of anything with the word "Norton" in it. Norton is not a friend to your computer.

Second, what version of Windows ( I assume) are you running.

You could alwaystry a system restore if you're running XP or above.

edit: damn! you guys are quick

K, BHO is a browser helper object and so my guess is that you didn't completely get rid of your hijacker.

I'd run HijackThis with a HijackThis log analyzer. Just google that, very self splanatory.

I would run Malwarebytes again to make sure you don't have any leftovers. You can also try inserting your Windows CD, then from your start menu click Run and type in: sfc /scannow

The quick way is to reinstall the OS.  The hard way is to find the startup files and remove their entries.

If you're savvy enough restore your computer to it's factory image or format the whole thing (it's a fuck-all approach but you won't miss anything).  Otherwise you could try an in-place repair install (again if you're savvy enough).  And the least effective / most work option is to continue running a slew of malware and virus detectors that aren't much better in terms of performance for your computer over viruses.

I'm running Windows Vista Hope Premium (V6.0/SP2).

It'll take me awhile to track down the CDs that came with the laptop. Any other options besides wiping the whole kit and kaboodle?

you will be better off in the long run backing up your personal files and starting fresh.
it may be a huge pain in the ass for a day or 2, but in the long run you will be better off. especially after a major virus.
my kids dumped one of the xp antivirus bugs on here. i fought it for a week, and the errors on simple shit afterwards was annoying.

The error message I get upon startup is:

ie3sh.exe Unable to locate component
This application has failed to start because BHO.DLL was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem.

Wilson claims to have a 230 grain solution to the problem but I know for a fact that he isn't particularly well-versed with software issues.

Ok, I'm going by memory, and that's never a good thing

But... Spybot Search and Destroy has an "Advanced Mode" that opens up some options.  The "Startup" option will let you manually deselect items that want to load when the system boots... That's where I think your problems are.  Write down the names of the files that report errors at startup and then deselect them.

It's been a while since I've fucked with a win box with that problem, I always did it manually, but I think that might do ya.

Oh yea, and before you do that, uninstall anything that says Symantec, Norton, or McAfee on it.  It's all fucking bullshit.

You really should look for those disks though.  Sounds like even if you do get the startup items squared away and all the extraneous security crap removed, you're still dealing with a machine that is suffering the effects of long use, multiple corrupt install/uninstalls, and possibly a severe porn addiction.  The machine, not you.  It's a pervert but we know you're pure as the driven snow.

Much obliged!

I'll have a sit down with Wilson regarding his Internet activity. I won't have that smut in my house.

Ya know what?  Nevermind my previous post.  That's spyware.  I might try malwarebytes on it, but the reinstall is sounding better and better.

Deselecting startup items will only work temporarily if that.

Bleepingcomputer.com or geekstogo.com both do case-by-case troubleshooting for these kinds of issues. They host a few specialized tools for those "hard to fix" issues.  Might give them a look&see.
