The CD-Rom and DVD players on my kid's computer have crapped out. In the device manager, they both
have the yellow exclamation points by them. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling them, but when I do this I get the Code 39 "Windows cannot load driver for this device. It may be missing or corrupted" Running Windoze XP Thanks for your help After much frustration, I found the solution. I had to erase some filter data in my registry. $Sys$crater to be exact. Pita, but it's working now. Thanks to all who replied. |

Have you read this and tried it's methods?

But I am suspicious that it's more than one device at the same time..... |

If the drivers are corrupt on the machine, simply uninstalling and reinstalling the device may not work. Download fresh ones and try. |

Are they both running off the same cable? Yes, they are both running off the same cable Do you have two IDE connectors on your motherboard with one running the hard drive and one the CDROMs? If so, take the one with your primary hard drive and put either one of the CDROMS on it and see what happens. |
| It sounds like you have IDE CD drives with the wide ribbon cable. If so, I would not be surprised if your IDE slot on your motherboard has malfunctioned. I've seen this happen a few times with some of my customer's computers. It can be a little difficult to diagnose at first because uninstalling/reinstalling drives is always the first step etc. However, I've seen this exact scenario and it was the IDE controller on the motherboard. A cheap and simple fix is this item.... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815263004 If that doesn't solve it....well you're back to square one, but if it's not the drivers, the cable or the actual drives that are dead, the IDE controller is about all that is left. Good luck. |
