I sometimes post at a truck/4x4 site and lately I've been having problems accessing that forum.  I run a laptop with Windows Vista and everything was fine until a month or so ago when the website was attacked by hackers.  New security features were added/enabled by the owner and ever since then, I've had problems getting the forum to work for more than a few minutes at a time.  I know the site's owner and he says that I'm the only one who has mentioned having problems.

Here is the error message I get when going to the site using Apple's Safari web browser:

"Safari can’t open the page “http://www.xxxxxxxxxxx.com/forum/showthread.php?p=65618#post65618”. The error is: “unknown error” (kCFErrorDomainWinSock:10054) Please choose Help > Report Bugs to Apple, note the error number, and describe what you did before you saw this message."

When using other browsers, like Firefox, it get an error message saying that the site won't work because the connection to the server has been reset.

Any ideas why this is happening and how to fix it?  I've already uninstalled and reinstalled my web browsers and had no luck.

Or Firefox. Safari's not a very heavily supported browser...good chance you're the only one on the site using it...hence only one having problems.  ;)

If you have errors in FF or IE8...then we can talk.

Yep, Firefox doesn't work.  Neither does Internet Explorer.  I've even downloaded and tried Opera, Maxthon and Flock.  None worked.  And, like I said in my first post, everything worked perfectly until the hack attack and its aftermath.

What kind of attack was it, specifically?
Try resetting your network connection. Whatever you are using (local connection or wireless) select diagnose and repair from right click-if it does not find an issue, go ahead and select repair anyway, then try the site.

It was a Denial Of Service attack, according to the owner.  I have teh internets through DirecTV and a wireless router.  Should I just reset the router, or go farther than that?

How do I fix that?

EDIT:  Pirate4x4 wasn't the site I was referring to, but I do post there also.

No, you need to do this on your PC.
Alternatively, run the command prompt as admin, type ipconfig /release and enter, then ipconfig /flushdns and enter, then ipconfig /renew and enter.
If your dns table was corrupted, that will fix it.

try this http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

If combo fix doesn't work run this:

To repair and reset the Windows Vista

  1. Click on Start button.
  2. Type Cmd in the Start Search text box
     .
  3. Press Ctrl-Shift-Enter keyboard shortcut to run Command Prompt as Administrator. Allow elevation request.
  4. Type netsh winsock reset in the Command Prompt shell, and then press the Enter key.
  5. Restart the computer.

What netsh winsock reset command does are it resets Winsock Catalog to a clean state or default configuration. It removes all Winsock LSP (Layered Service Providers) previously installed, including the potential malfunctioned LSP that causes loss of network packets transmission failure. So all previously-installed LSPs must be reinstalled. This command does not affect Winsock Name Space Provider entries.

Note: To check which LSPs installed on your Vista system, use netsh winsock show catalog command.

I wish it was a Mac.  It's actually a Toshiba laptop running Windows Vista.  I just use Safari, Mac's web browser, because I like how it's set up.

I was hesitant to suggest a stack reset at this stage, but if a dns flush doesn't fix it, that would be the next thing.
