| Our laptop picked up a bug and quit working. My husband reformatted it w/ the disks, but we can't get anywhere with it. We can get online using a stick, that's it. None of the icons returned to put on the screen, and the functions (IE, Apple, etc.) are not available from the start button. Only trash can shows. We can't even use restart to follow online instructions to reformat. Any ideas? It is an Inspirion 1525. Thanks! |

Can you click on Start and see run? If so, type in iexplore.exe and hit enter. If it comes up go to this site and run a full scan.

The description fits a Mac, and as we all know Macs are not vulnerable to virii and exploits, nor are they able to suffer hardware failure, and when they do fail Steve Jobs comes to your house and fixes them himself. |

Thanks, we will try the iexplore.exe. It needs to be burned with fire, not fixed.
And no, not a joke. It's not a MAC, it's a Dell Inspirion 1525 - about 3 to 4 yrs. old. I was tired last night so maybe I was not coherent. When my husband reformatted, obviously we lost everything. It won't allow us to restore to factory settings or get online via our wireless. He is using a broadband stick (?) to get online. It is Vista. None of the icons show up on the screen when it powers up, and it is missing the bar across the top that also contained icons. My daughter had tons of apps., including Safari (which I called Apple), not sure why Safari was part of her laptop set up. Basically, the screen is blue, except for the start menu which is empty and a trash can. |

When you 'reformat' you basically wipe everything out and start fresh.
The 'apple' on the desktop was a link to a program. All of the other icons that were on your desktop were links to other programs. You will have to reinstall them. I'll put it like this. Your computer is like a plot of land. The operating system (windows Vista) is the house built on it. The icons and programs you had are the furniture and appliances. What you did was plowed the house down completely to the ground and built a new house. It is now empty. You have to fill it back up. |
