| Excuse me for my ignorance, but I know that lots of Arf-comers are posting from duty in Iraq (thank you, God bless, btw). How is this happening? Do you guys have personal laptops, are there unit computers to use, or what? How limited is your access to them? |

Pretty much every base (with the possible exception of some small temp outpost or the RPs along the MSRs) has an MWR with internet available for free, but you have to wait in line and speed is iffy. Most bases also have an "internet cafe" through AAFES where you have to pay by the hour for service, but usually no lines and better speed. In some units soldiers have co-opted together to purchase all the equipment and service needed for the co-op members to have wifi on their laptops. Some guys spend the $$$ and purchase direct sattelite service, and I've heard that some bases have AAFES selling wifi access subscriptions. Right now I'm on an MWR computer, starting Monday I should have wifi access through a unit co-op. |
+1 - got back in February. Every camp I visited had some sort of internet, free or pay depending on the availability in that particular area. We had an MWR with decent internet connection. Computers were donated from somewhere in the states and soldiers paid for monthly access from local iraqi internet service. Certertainly not secure, but it worked well for IM and email. |
