Thinking about getting one of those new MacBooks and I was wondering about the compatibility between Macs and PCs in regards to things like USB drives, etc.  If I have a bunch of files on a USB drive, or an external hard drive, can I swap it between the two without having to format the disk?  Also, suppose I have an external hard drive that's been formatted by TrueCrypt.  Will I be able to use that across both systems as well?

USB and External drive are plug and play between the two.

Unless you have true crypt for the Mac, you will have a problem. I don't know if a version exists for OS X or not.

I use drives between Windows, OS X, and Linux all the time with no problems.

You should be able to get files off a windows usb drive but if you try and use macs built in backup app you will have to format it to mac.

Most thumb drives are FAT 32 so they can swap easily. Make your share drives NTFS and access via SMB.

They use the same protocols so they communicate well together.
