I remember a few years ago heading off to the range on a winter morning....temp in the teens, snow falling steadily. I was standing out in the middle of a field, up to my calves in snow...had the range to myself
Its fun to watch ejected hot brass cases hit a layer of snow, melt down into it, and let off steam as it happens. I miss that...need to go do that again soon. |

We'd let off a few mags and then hop back in the truck to warm up and load mags.

| I teach a firearms class this month every year for middlebury college and it is usually 0 or below.I have warm clothes so the cold does not bother me.students have college vans to warm up in and load mags and belts.too cold to take gloves off to do it outside.could not get tannerite to explode below zero. |

Went this past Weds and expected cold. Ended up around 34, calm and sunny. Able to shed several
layers. Slight hold over change with the FAL at 200yds. No firearm problems. Very nice day at the range. No people, no bugs and some left over snow to keep my water cold.

Yep, seen the tannerite not exploding when its cold enough out - seems to be more related to being less sensitive.
I'll go no matter how cold it is. I generally avoid really windy days for range time anyways - but cold doesn't bother me. Only thing I hate is losing brass in the snow - so I usually throw a tarp down where my ejection area is |

Go at any temp., always like to test how well they work at different temp.
Last week (think it was below zero) 
Some days you have melted snow & ice part way up the boot at the bench 
Yesterday we had a warm day but it was foggy and raining. Was hard to make out targets at 75 yds. 
This picture is zoomed in to 75 yd berm and the rock about 1' wide so pumped 40 rds of AK into it. 
Rain is fun 
Fluted barrel seemed to cool extra good today

-37 degrees with a 12 mph wind. Winters in North Dakota can be pretty long, and sometimes you just have to say, screw it. I got back home, opened the pistol case, and frost(not condensation, ICE) formed instantly, ON THE PISTOL. Took a half hour before I could touch it without getting freezer burn.
Blue Dot doesn't ignite consistently at that temperature. I have the ringed barrel to prove it.

Lowest i've shot at was around 5 with chill.......partially to see how well my guns would work. AR went down after 25m or so due to light primer strikes, discovered later the hammer spring was installed wrong. M1 carbine did OK although it jammed a few times which wasn't normal. My FNP ran like a champ and i put out one of my best groups ever with it. |

I enjoy going shooting in the cold, heat, rain, snow, wind, etc. Fewer idiots at the range on those days. Plus, I learn how my guns and ammo work in less than perfect environments. The only time we don't shoot is when there is lightning, lightning has the right of way.

Range I belonged to in Nebraska had a "Snowball Match" second weekend in January every year, regardless of weather. One year it was -20 with about 24" of snow on the ground. I was told the story of a year prior where it was so cold, they made one guy hike out to the 100yd range to set up targets. Took him a while to push through the snow. When he got there, they shouted out to him to only put up one target and get in the pits. He heard a bunch of firing, then they shouted at him to take the target down and come back.
While he was hiking out to the pits, the rest of the competitors had decided the course of fire was going to be one round at 100 yards so they could go home.

10 degrees is the coldest I ever went out to shoot in. Warmed up a couple of times in the car and loaded mags. I hated putting my targets up at the 200 yard mark though. My feet froze while walking out there in all of that snow. I do love having the entire range to myself
