I have a brother that is a lot younger than me (half-brother from a second marriage) who is considering the Coast Guard.

He's heard that there is a waiting list to enlist.

Is this true to anyone's knowledge?

If so, anything that he can do to increase his chances of enlisting sooner rather than later?

I get that it would serve him well to achieve a solid score on the ASVAB (don't believe he's taken yet).

What else other than that?

Right now the Coast Guard is roughly 1100 personnel over what it is allowed. There is roughly a 1 to 1.5 year wait to get in.

This is pretty much the truth of it right now. Extremely long waiting period, but he might as well get his name on the list. I know the reserve mission is still going strong for the moment though, so he may want to consider going in as a reservist.
