So, how many of you have your check engine light on and simply don't give a shit? Personally, mine is on because of an evap leak (small)... which probably means the gas cap seal sucks. But Al Gore can fuck off since I don't have emission testing.

What type of vehicle? My wife Subaru Baja had an evap leak that I easily chased down to the purge valve in the right rear near the charcoal canister. I have an OBD II reader from Walmart I used to reset and read the codes. Valve was like $20. 09 cobalt. I seriously don't care enough to even chase it down, I flat out ripped the evap system and EGR out of my old LS1 firebird. Useless bullshit. |

I just plug in the diagnostic tool every time to make sure it's not a new code That's what I do. Plug in the code reader and clear the evap code. My Denali has the remote start feature, but it won't work when the CE light is on. I keep it cleared. Too hot in Texas in the summer not to cool it down before I get in. |

Mine WAS on for about a year, but I knew what was causing it. I replaced my exhaust manifold and catalytic converter with a short tube header and a high flow catalytic converter - that was causing a downstream O2 sensor error. A couple of weeks ago I finally got off my ass and put an O2 sensor extender on the downstream sensor and cleared the error. No CEL now.

No lights on here.
Had one on last week - EGR passage was blocked by carbon buildup in the intake manifold. I was actually planning on cleaning it out this winter when I am doing some other engine work, but since it threw the code, I went ahead and cleaned it last weekend. Improved idling quite a bit, and no more CEL/MIL. |
No way I can drive with a CEL on. I'm not wired like that. I have pocket scan tools in every vehicle. If the CEL comes on, I plug it in, see what the issue is, clear the code if possible, and start making plans for the repairs. My son's CEL has been on in his truck since about the week after he bought it. He couldn't care less. He takes after his mother's people!

If it was me, I'd do a visual inspection of the lines as best I could, look for cracks in the plastic fittings and the ohm/volt check the purge valve solenoid. You can back probe the connector and check it's operation with power on to see if it's working. I would bet that's your issue. 2009 isn't that old that you'd have dry rotted cracked lines or fittings. If everything is connected and hasn't been tampered with, it's most likely your purge valve. http://www.cobaltss.net/forums/2-0l-lnf-performance-tech-153/disconnected-evap-purge-solenoid-%3D-very-happy-lnf-207984/index8.html |

Guess it won't hurt to pull out a flashlight. Thanks. (Still think it's stupid though) Code is p0442 |

If I only had idiot lights, yes, I'd have to have it checked.
But, I've got oil, temp, amp, tach gages so the "check engine" light being on doesn't bother me in the least so long as it's running right. They've got way to many sensors on the new vehicles. I like driving my 78 CJ. I can fix it with a screwdriver and channel locks. |

I have a 2007 Suburban with the light on for 70,000 miles. Apparently the sensor inside the gas tank is bad, and I'm not paying the cost to drop the tank to replace it. Those damn things go bad in all sorts of vehicles. I've seen quite a few and they are all that same crappy sensor. Should be a recall on them as bad as they are, or just go back to the good ol reed switch. The cel should be called a "check emissions light". It is really there for the epa. My car can have something so wrong with it that it will be in a low power limp mode, with codes, but because emissions are good it wont turn the cel on. If it is blinking, dont drive it. That is usually telling you there is a misfire and this will cause probs elsewhere if you keep driving it. |
|
P0128 comes and goes on my Malibu, thermostat changed and the code pops up now and then.
I just clear it when it does since the remote start function will not work with a CEL. I think it's a bad sensor but the car is my work beater and I just keep the oil changed and tires and brakes on the car. If it dies I'll just snap up another. |
|
Been on since I bought the vehicle... The previous owner cut the exhaust system off with a plasma torch at the header. No crap it's leaking emissions..... (Replaced the header and exhaust, but the light won't go off. Easier to just ignore the light then spend the time clearing the codes ) |

I don't remember it ever being off. The wifes Enclave throws a Stabilitrack brake warning intermittently. She calls me every time. ![]() Mrs Dragracer: The brake warning light is on. Dragracer: Ok Mrs Dragracer: It knocked the cruise off. Dragracer: Mmmmm. Mrs Dragracer: Is it safe to drive? Dragracer: Do the brakes work? Mrs Dragracer: Dragracer: Ok, should be fine. Mrs Dragracer: But what if the brakes suddenly stop working? Dragracer: I don't think they will. Mrs Dragracer: Think?.... We should buy a new car. Dragracer: The code says it is brake fluid level, nope. The forums say it may be a wheel speed sensor. Oh, and I have been trying to catch a pack rat in the garage for about a month. I am guessing a wire somewhere. |
|
Mine came on about a month ago..(2006 Explorer w/193,000mi). They brought up the code at the auto parts store; said it could be minor or it could be a six hundred dollar problem. Suggested I continue to drive it until something more conclusive happens. Light went off for the last three weeks; came back on two days ago. Will probably cover it with tape. |
