It's officially started!

Today's stats (May 3rd, 2010):

Water: 50 oz approx (not good, this is well below my normal)

Exercise: I did some walking with jogging mixed in, it was going better until some idiot at the park was playing disc golf and while I was jogging his freaking disc he threw hit me in my right foot right on the ball. It didn't hurt really but it jacked my ankle/foot up, although it's fine now. Total exercise? 25 minutes worth, I worked up a "small" sweat. Nothing special, feel pretty shitty about it.

Diet: I slept late so I ate around 11am, I had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on organic sprouted wheat bread (Ezekiel 4:9), the peanut butter was organic, made from organic peanuts, nothing else. The jelly was regular grape jelly, pure shit in other words. I don't plan on eating this garbage, but I had no food in the house.

I went over to my girlfriends house who is not my girlfriend this week, but will be whenever she stops being pissed at me. I had a couple handfuls of tostito chips, and a granola bar, again, pure shit. Off to a horrible start.

For dinner, I ate a late dinner, I made a salad from organic romaine lettuce, organic croutons (only a few), some shredded cheese, and some homemade italian dressing that is made from olive oil.

That's it for today.

Tomorrow, I hope to do better. Thoughts on today?

Put yourself on a 1000 calorie deficit and just eat healthy stuff and drink lots of water. As in be the guy thats constantly carrying a bottle of it. I wouldnt do much more than brisk walking till you drop some weight. Good luck and consider this a tag for motivation for both of us.

Oh and I hear picking up dirty laundry is good cardio.

ETA Go to myfitnesspal.com or find another one but the best thing you can do is find a good calorie/food tracker. I use the fitnesspal.com one. livestrong.com has one too. Its pretty much the best thing Ive done so far other than the P90X fitness routine.

David,

You've got 100% of my support and my admiration.  I'm so close to your stats (1" taller and I'd guess about 10 years older) it's scary....right down to the bodyfat % (as measured by a handheld device I'm very dubious about...I think mine's a lot higher than 43%).

I'll be cheering for you and watching this thread with interest.  Big KUDOS for taking action!

I do a lot of reading about diet and fitness and the general consensus seems to be that 70-80% of your battle will be diet-related.  Exercise certainly can make a big difference but it seems to matter more when maintaining weight than losing it.

Speaking from personal experience, walking or bicycling are probably the best things you can do for now.  I'd throw in some strength training but you may need to keep it light.  I've tried barbell work but I always seem to hurt myself due to my size so I bought a kettlebell and Pavel's "Enter the Kettlebell".   It's perfect for my situation and might be for yours as well.  Think about looking into it.

Good luck and at 230 you'll feel (and look) like a completely new man!

Good luck Bro, you can do it ...it's all about self control.. Do ALOT of walking.  At this point don't do any running, you may hurt your self and you do not need that now.   If you drink Sodas STOP this alone will help.... Drink water, good food and portion control... you do not need to eat until you are full.

ETD - I forgot to mention, begin lifting weights, adding muscle mass will speed up your metabolism - it will take a few months to "happen" but it will and it will help!

How far do you live from work ?

I lost 35 lbs in just over a month by walking 4 miles to work and back ..... The nice thing about walking to work is if you are one who easily get distracted or calls it quits early..... , Once you are more then about 1/4 of the way there , you are committed , turn around and you will be late for work , and once at work you need to get home.....

Then I moved 13 miles from work , stopped walking and spent the next year gaining it all back

Currently working on a 1/2 car 1/2 bicycle route that will get me back to where I was and hopefully further as 18 miles each way is a little much to start out trying to ride  ....

[#12]
Do you have a treadmill or a bike?  I agree with Strudle54 on walking a lot right now, so something you can do is walk while watching TV or reading (some can't do the latter) instead of sitting down.  The TV should keep you distracted while you walk.  Or take someone with you.  I know for me, if I can keep my mind off of running/walking, I can go farther.

You are fighting the battle that we all do as we get older.  I respect your will to try to better your mental and physical side.  I would add in religion if you don't have any yet.  I find that the Bible gives me lots of verses that are applicable to lifes challenges - especially losing weight and eating healthy.  People praying for will power for you can help as well.

You have to get that cardio going though.  Diet is huge and a good cardio program helps start the avalanche.

I see you have an Iphone, there are weight loss APPS and use your MP# to play songs that motivate you.  I exercise to a play list called Muscle Motivation.  I could PM you some song ideas, I have near 200 I run and lift to.

May 5th, 2010:

Breakfast:

1 Ezekiel 4:9 Organic Sprouted English Muffin
2 Organic Free-Range Eggs
2 slices of Cheddar Cheese (I know, its bad, but it's better than eating other shit right now...:) )

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––-

Mid-morning snack:

1 organic pear

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––-

Lunch:

My special concoction (Pinto beans, black beans, chili beans, beef, grene pepper, onion, and seasoning)

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––-

Mid-afternoon snack:

1 organic pear

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––-

Dinner:

2 chicken fajitas, about 800 cals total, these are homemade and were eaten on organic sprouted tortilas!

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––-

Water:

8 glasses, approximately 80 oz.

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Going to workout now... doing the following:

Swiss Ball Ab Crunch (yes, sounds gay, sorry) ––- 4 sets, 15-20 reps each set

Reverse Crunch ––- 4 sets, 15 reps each set

Cross Crunch ––- 4 sets, 15-20 reps each set

Cardio:

20 minutes HIIT. However, I'll be doing like 3-4 minutes walking, 1 minute running. It equals out to 16 minutes walking, 4 minutes running for tonight.

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Overall:

I am feeling better and have more energy.

I have a horrible problem of eating out and eating shit, so I have NOT eaten out in the past 3 days and it feels damn good to be eating super healthy and all at home.

Energy is up, water intake is getting better, 5 meals a day, it's getting there. Just need to get the workouts consistent and then we should start seeing weight loss on a decent level?

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Thanks so much for all the support and tips guys. I really appreciate it, I check this thread while at work throughout the day and it really helps to keep motivating me to continue!

To clarify any further comments:

I only eat all organic vegetables, free-range meat (beef, chicken, eggs, etc...), organic fruit, and organic sprouted wheat for grains. For cheese, I typically only eat organic raw cheese but I am out of it and just eating up the regular cheese for now.

If you want to know why I eat only those things, you can ask and I will tell but I wont get into it for now as it just takes away from the original intent of this journal.

Guys, thanks again so much for the support and encouragement. I really encourage as many of you to start journals/logs on here and we'll lose weight or bulk up together. Heck, we can even start our own contest!

Moving on to a healthier me and lifestyle!

See you tomorrow, and thanks again!

Start going on evening walks or walks during the day.  It helps clear the mind as well as burning off some calories. It doesn't have to be long maybe 20 min. During lunch breaks go for a walk around the block.

I'd like to wish you luck.  I, myself, am 6'5" and 330lbs.  I peaked at about 365lbs and have recently been as low as 319lbs.  I used to work out constantly and eat right till I hurt my back and have spent the last 10 years packing on the pounds from inactivity.  Some advice I can give is to not worry about eating organic.  Stay away from Whole Foods or you will be fat and broke.  The best thing you can do is find out if there is a co-op in your area.  We belong to one here and pay $50 for a 50-60lb box of fruits and veggies every 2 weeks.  You can also buy cases of something if you really like it.  Also, instead of eating three times a day, eat six and make your meals smaller.  This keeps your metabolism going and will keep your energy up.

Once again, good luck on your journey.

I don't understand the opposition to eating organic.  I have seen others in this thread criticize it as well but I see no problem with the OP wanting to eat organic foods.  I encourage the OP on his journey and I think it is great that you are adding organics to your weight loss journey.  you might check local farmers markets as well for your produce, wether you want organics or not there are usually great selections and fresher and tastier than anything you are going to find at a grocery store.  You may also find a farmers market that sells organics if that is what you choose to buy I know I go to one here that has about 10 farmers and all of them are organic and to boot there are several farmers selling meats and cheeses as well.

Either way good luck man I have recently hit the big 300 due to a lot of sedentary living because of a leg injury I have.  The highest prior to this I had ever hit was 270 but lately I have gotten to about 314.  The scary thing is a doctor told me that at 6' 4" I should weigh 190 and I can't imagine how that would be possible.

Hey guys!

Horrible day today...

I went and saw Iron Man 2 (great movie btw), and I cheated and had soda and a tub of popcorn. I feel so ridiculously guilty and bad that it ruined my day.

I only drank about half of the soda, but ate the whole tub of popcorn (no wonder im 380, right?)

So, I felt bad... and then I was jogging/running last night and I pulled a muscle in both my legs so walking/running is out until I heal. That's what I get for not stretching!

For supper I ate a big salad w/ grilled chicken on organic romaine lettuce w/ olive oil for dressing and some shredded cheese (I know, need to get the cheese out!).

I didn't do much for exercise, pretty bummed about my diet today and then on top of it it's snowing so that put a damper on things as well.

Thanks for all the support and those who are pro-organic ;)

Tomorrow I will do much better, that's a promise!

Thanks again for all the support.

Eating Habits:
I stopped eating/drinking Coke, Fast Food and I cut way back on Alcohol (1 - 2 Beers Per Month if that).
I started Eating Breakfast (I used to never eat breakfast).

Workout:
The first 75 lbs I did a combination of cardio and free weights. I have a C2 Rowing Machine and I'd row 10,000 meters in the morning before breakfast. Then after work I'd go over to my friend's house and lift free weights. (I did this routine 5 days a week)

The last 25 lbs I had started graduate school and just couldn't find the time to lift in the evenings but I did stick with getting my cardio done in the morning before breakfast.

Weight Loss:
It took me just under a year to lose 100 lbs. Cardio + Free Weights = 2.5 lb loss per week; Cardio Only = 1.25 lbs per week.

Plateau:
The plateau sucks. My body just hit the breaks after I hit the 100 lb mark. To be honest I didn't focus much on nutrition I just made smart choices but I think I've reached a point where I need to re-evaluate my nutrition to create the necessary calorie deficit for weight loss.

I agree with loose the soda it is your enemy DRINK WATER.  You may not like it at first but after a while you will hate soft drinks.  I used to be a MD junky big time to the pint where I would drink 1-3 20 oz. bottles a day.  I quit and went to water and now I gag at the thought of it.  Also, for get the snow WALK!! unless you are having a MAJOR snowstorm you should be walking every day find time to do it man you won't regret it.

Good luck, but it sounds like you are not taking it seriously.  If you already slipped a few times in only 5 days of the diet then you need to reconsider what your plan is.

There is no such thing as a diet.  What you need is a lifestyle change.  I am only 25yrs old, but when I was in high school and college I was around 230lbs.  I am 6'4" tall, so I wasn't obese, but I didn't like the way I felt.  I decided my sophomore year of college to get my act together and totally change my lifestyle.  I cut out all fast food, sodas, sugary treats, etc.  I started cooking my own meals and only went out on the weekends with my buddies to the bars for my cheat once a week.  I dropped over 30lbs in the first 6 months and now hover around 170-180lbs.  I am probably a little under weight and need to put some lean muscle on my frame, but I feel a 100% better now than I did back in my high school days.

You need to set a plan and stick to it.  There are a lot of good websites out there that can set up meal and exercise plans that will help you greatly.

Best of luck to you.

Another tip:  Try to get you GF involved in the change.  It makes it a lot easier if you have someone by your side helping you along with the process.

I am really not against eating organic fruits and vegetables.  I am against buying and eating organic junk food.  Junk food is junk food, whether conventional or organic.  In most cases, the organic junk food is worse for you than the regular stuff.  The reason I told the OP to stay away from places like WF is because you can get tricked into thinking something is better for you because it is organic.

I like your ideas about finding local farmers markets.  Another thing to look for are CSA's, which stand for Community Supported Agriculture.  This is where you pay money to a farmer or group of farmers for the next season's crops.  This gives them money to buy seed and supplies to grow the crops.  When they come in, you get fresh, organic, vegetables for however many weeks the season lasts.  We did one last year that got us 20lbs of fresh produce for 12 weeks at about $20 a week.  Our CSA also had the option of buying fresh bison meat and fresh, unpasteurized goat's milk and cheese.

Good Luck.

Okay guys, update....

I weighed in today at 380.4, which means I lost 1 pound. That is sad on so many levels, but for how bad I ate, I will take a one pound loss!

I am getting more into the swing of things and I know that this week will be easier and I am hoping to lose at least 2.5 pounds / week!

Yesterday I helped my Dad build some raised garden beds and also did MMA training with him and my brother, extremely sore, can't wait to walk/run tonight on the treadmill and lift some weights! Love the burn and love the sore!

This week I feel good and strong going into it, I really need to get out of the 380s and 370s, once I am in the 360s I will feel like I am making progress because I've been stuck in the 370s for a long time. Hopefully in a few weeks I can be out of the 370s.

Last week really was bad, I didn't exercise like I wanted to as much, and I didn't eat as good as I could have. I also overate on a few nights.

Thanks for all the support, it's really appreciated!

ETA: I am going to try and cut out grains this week to see how that affects the scale and my energy levels. Lately, I get crap in my throat when eating grains, perhaps I should try and eliminate them and go for veggies and meat only this week. We'll try it and see what happens!

I agree with you 100%! This week I am determined not to slip one bit.

Thanks!

Hey, at a pound a week, you'll look great in 3 years!

Gotta try harder, man.  Eat less.  No human body can sustain its weight on half rations.

If you enter into a starvation diet, you WILL lose weight. However, you will become hopelessly insulin sensitive. When you begin to eat normal, you pack the pounds RIGHT BACK ON. Even at a lesser caloric intake. Your body will be in survival mode at that point.

If his normal caloric intake is 2500/day, he shouldn't "return to normal" ever.

You can try to lose weight without cutting calories, but you'll just gain weight and frustration.

Something's wrong, and it's not that the eight pounds of food a day isn't green enough.

And it's 100 times easier to eat a pound than it is to work it off, so I don't think you're going to solve dietary problems by exercising.

ETA: OP, what's the caloric total of your daily intake?  Forget whether it's green or yummy or grainy or not, just what's the calorie count according to the packaging?  (Of everything including dressings, drinks, etc.)

You dont sound ready to take it serious. Everyone wants to lose weight, not everyone wants to lose what they need to do it.

Yep, definitely not going to do that. Thanks!

I plan on a 500 calorie deficit a day, that's 1 pound a week just from diet, another pound from exercise should be good.

The average day's calorie intake was about 2100 to 2200. The calculations according to the website say that my daily caloric intake to maintain my weight is around 3300 to 3500, given that my job is at a desk all day. They recommend I eat about 2600 yo 2800 to lose 1 pound a week (that assumes no exercise). I am eating about 2200 roughly, so it makes sense...

I also ate some pretty shitty foods and there was two days over the weekend where I wasn't tracking (no excuses). I am sure those few days where I wasn't tracking I ate more than I was suppose to.

Yeah, 1 pound isn't the best, but it's still a pound. I'll get better.

With all due respect, you don't have a clue how ready I am or how serious. I get what you're saying, I really do, but because I didn't lose as much as I wanted to on my first week, that doesn't define me or my goals. I still lost a pound and I did shitty. This week I am going to go balls to the wall and get much better results.

I am in your same situation. I'm 5'9" and 285. I've just started my weight loss journey two weeks ago. I pulled something in my back so now I have to wait on that before I get going again, but your thread has put some fire back in me. Don't mind the haters, no one is perfect! And if they think they are then they need to remember that someone out there still thinks they're an ASSHAT!  Forget them and get to work! I'll support you as I'm along the same journey!
