I have a 2003 F-150.

I do a lot of mountain driving... when the pads really heat up I get squeeling and a kind of rubbing noise (not grinding). Around town they work fine...WTF? I only have about 12,000 miles on these pads so far. They cost more and are supposedly better.

Need to pull the wheels and have a look. Thinking of just getting regular pads next time.

Ask over at www.bobistheoilguy.com in the brake forum....lot of good info.

Check out Hawk or Porterfield brake pads. They will eat rotors over time a lot faster than normal pads. I believe they are of ceramic/kevlar construction.

I heard about this AFTER I installed the pads...also heard rumors that the pads don't last as long...

Ceramic pads are harder on your rotors but provide better braking performance.  They also provide better heat dissipation and shoud not be making noise.  So it sounds like either you have rotors that need some machining or crap between your pads and rotors.

I have an 04 F-150, the brakes (pads + rotors) on 03-04 F-150 are crap.  I would go ahead and swap both.  You will be surprised with the performance change.

+1

I changed my 2004 F150 to Akebono ceramic pads.  Noticed about a 10-15% increase in stopping power and ZERO dust.

Great product.

I use Hawk's street version front and back but that is in my civic which weights about half of your truck.  Some pads work better when warm others break down when they get hot.  Just because it is making a little noise though does not mean that they are not working.  When they are making noise do they still have the same stopping power or do you get a lot of brake fade?

They seem to have the same stopping power...they just make a lot of noise. I also notice a slight rumbling sound too going downhill and breaking hard at high speed...(have to slow down to make a turnoff at the bottom of a hill).

The rotors seemed fine when I put the pads on..nice and smooth, so I didn't have them turned (almost never have rotors turned).

I'll pull the wheels and have a look this weekend. Just seems odd to be making these kinds of noises when they heat up. Never had a problem with standard pads in 17 years of driving.

I think the pads were Raybestos (never had a problem with this brand)
