[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Caught stealing (Page 1 of 3)

| I just caught my neighbor, a felon, whose had his power turned off, stealing my electricity. I called the cops, they haven't shown up yet. The situation is this. He bought the house next door to me that used to be my Grandmother's. We shared a well, and I payed him for the electricity used. He burned the house down. I had to run the power to my house. He got out of jail and has been using my power to use the well, which was o.k., because I was still on it. I am on my own well now. I still run the power to his well, and he was supposed to get a switch hooked up to his trailer to run the power. He hasn't. I got my power bill today and it was double normal. I checked and his power has been turned off for several weeks. Tonight I noticed his lights were on. He's hooked on to the well power source ans is living off of my power. Rather than just flip the switch at my breaker, I figured I'd turn him in. What are my legal options? This guy is on his 4th felony at least, and the law is looking for him now. Thanks. |

Right now, you did the right thing. If they catch him, and it is infact a case of him stealing your power with intent, this should be quite a bad thing for him. Unless there is some sort of 'misunderstanding' or whatever bullshit and the cops buy his excuse, I think he may be headed back to jail. |
|
SO wait.....This guy has committed numerous felonies and you state the law has been looking for him. Yet, you only worry about the law looking for him when it is an inconvenience to you IE: him stealing your power.
Sounds like a crappy attitude to have, since it didnt affect you before you let a known felon who has a warrant out on him live right next door, but the minute his lifestyle affects you then you call the police. Maybe you should have done the right thing in the first place and never let a known felon with a warrant live beside you, an anonymous call could have saved you alot of problems. |

Please call the power company. They deal with this often enough to know how to handle it, and it usually won't go well for the thief. hes not stealing it from the power company. so why will they get involved if its the OP fault for still allowing the felon to use his power for his well? |
|
Or - you could trip the breaker and padlock the breaker box.
If he asks about it, tell him you've noticed that your bill has been very high lately, and you're trying to cut down. Since you no longer use that well, it doesn't make any sense to supply power to it. I dare him to say anything at that point... |

You can't tap into someones else's meter/house. It is dangerous, causes fires, possible explosion at the box if mr perp has his power turned back on and it's still hooked up. Also, most places won't allow it as it's against code. If nothing else OP, call the township office and speak to an inspector or someone in the know. |

He made two payments and stopped...I want him charged....Sorry dude, take him to civil court. He didn't break a law he broke a civil contract. The part in red.... ...makes it an I'm not sure....maybe criminal....maybe not....needs more details on what exactly you guys verbally agreed to.

I talked with the utilities already, said to call the cops first. They're on their way now and will take it up with the Power Company tomorrow. I will disconnect after they catch him and it's on record. They know full well who he is. He spends more time in jail than he does at home. I told the Lt. not to let him lie his way out and he said "I don't believe shit that boy says." This used to be an upper class neighborhood. Oh well. I told them not to pull up in the yard with their lights on so he'd turn the power off, so he's gonna meet me down the street a bit and we'll walk up to his yard, cut through the woods and come out behind his house. This should get really interesting.

This thread needs an MS paint showing property lines, wells, and electrical connections.
My initial thought is that if you're running power to his property from your property then you're giving it to him and it's his to do with what he pleases until you do your part and shut it off. But again...needs MS Paint |
| StonedV8, you're talking out of your ass, you have no idea what the history is here or the whole situation, and you don't know shit about me. I don't break the law, and I don't bend it, and I can't be bought. I hate felons, and they should all be breaking rocks and doing hard labor with three decent meals and nothing else but pain and a shitty life, unless they're murderers or rapists, in which case they should be executed. I don't have a crappy attitude about his felon status, when they asked I told them he was living in town at the time which he was. I've taken this guy to court several times and won. Most of these issues involve his Pit Bulls attacking my family members. I won't divulge further info on that matter. If they're looking and I know I tell them. I'm the only person here now that has the balls to do anything. I've had to break up two drug rings, going as far as to go over locals heads that looked the other way because of pay-offs. Officers were fired and re assigned. This happened twice. I've put my ass on the line. I try to get along with people and raise my family, but some people are just shitheads. |

I think you'll get more response out of the power company than the cops. But who knows. Bingo... I've had to do this more than once with "construction service" where people though my temp pole was for everyone. But yeah the power co. will knock their dick in the dirt! Cops may or may not do anything but the power co. will go for felony charges as it is somehow a federal deal. |

| It'll be in the teens tonight. Locked and loaded, I guess it could be a great chance to check out the effectiveness of my new 6.8 build. I just wish the UPS truck would've brought my combat loaded SSA today. Right now I'm running 90gr TNTs, but I do have 14 Magtech 185s in my in my Para Ordnace, they are really nasty at 1148 fps. I've chronographed them at 1125 from mine so it's close.Actually, I pray that I never have to use my firearms that way, but that if I do, I'll be faster and more accurate than the other guy, and I try to train for it as best I can. |

He's not stealing. You agreed to let him use your power. He didn't come by in the night and run a line to your house. He's more of a deadbeat. |

A check with the utility that his power was recently shut off would seem to make it clear what happened but it might too much of a mess for the police to want to get involved in. I had a client with almost the exact same problem and the police would show up say "Stop arguing, go to small claims court" and leave |

They will say he is a thief but this is a civil matter sue him and cut power. |

I have worked for a power co. now for 32 years. He is taking power from your meter, I work these all the time, I can not a thing if he is taking power from you on your meter, only if he is taking power that is not being metered. The best I can do is to tell you to call the police and file on him. I know this sucks but that is the best I can do. |
|
It will probably be treated as a civil matter. You allowed him to use your power to his well. It could be considered implied permissive use if you never forbade him from using it in his trailer. You mentioned no written agreement. It would be your word against his basically. |
Devils advocate:
If you called the cops on me for this and they arrested me based on your accusations I'd sue your ass for false arrest. You GAVE me that power. You said I could use it You hooked it up yourself, it's not like I came to your house and hooked it up in the middle of the night. You felt bad for me and said I could use it temporarily as long as it wasn't too much. If you didn't want me to use it you should have just cut it off! /DA |
