Our cat died yesterday. I would like to get another cat for my husband. He was very upset yesterday.

Can anyone suggest  types of cats that don't shed much? I don't know much about cats.

Thanks.

I would think that it is too soon to get another pet IMO. Mention that you would like another cat someday and leave it alone until he brings it up.

I agree with this.  Replacing one immediately with another isn't such a great idea sometimes.  Let him grieve and heal, then get another one.  Just my .02.

I also agree.  Give him some time.  I've had my cat for 18 years and I do not look forward to the day she leaves me.  I have heard that the Maine Coon does not shed much, but I don't know that first hand.

best way to eliminate shedding is to brush your cat(s) every day. It eliminates most of the loose hair and they don't shed as much. We have two cats - a medium hair and the other has very thick, plush hair. As long as I keep them brushed there's no problem.

But, like the others said, give yourselves time to grieve. At least a couple months. THEN surprise him with a kitten.

or even an older kitty from the rescue!

My cats have been rescued from one place or another. For some reason, they seem to make the BEST ones. The same can be said for a dog too. You are saving their life from getting euthanized. Spaying your cars or dogs is important too. There is too many out there all alone and abandoned. I REALLY hate that too. One of my #1 peeves.

BTW, My Russian cat will actually let me vacuum him with the shop vac. I put it out in the hallway and shut the door as much as possible. cover his ears with my hand to keep out noise level. YES, he actually lets me do this. It also helps ( if they get some fleas out in the yard ) for a quick removal sometimes if they wind up with several....
Russians are a pretty mellow cat. Mushy too..

Yes, I do give them baths when they need it. Fleas and ticks are such a pain in the ass too.

That is one of the most disturbing things I've ever seen. Makes me want to reach for my zombie weapons.

OP, all critters shed but a short hair won't be so bad. Like has been mentioned, regular grooming's important. Mine don't make us bleed (anymore) come bath time but the Coon/Siamese mix sets up an unholy racket. Sounds like we're murdering babies in there.

Has the man unit mentioned wanting another cat? My family has been notified that after these two are gone there will be no more. They can have fish. Or, I don't know, a lizard. No more fur or feathers.

Sorry for your loss, my pets are like my kids.

Local animal shelter, short hair kitten.

I'd wait a bit before throwing a new cat at him.

We waited a full year before we got a new puppy after our 14 year old female Blue Heeler died, my wife still wasn't ready for a new puppy.
We only got a male Blue Heeler at my insistance, and still 3 years later it's sometimes a love/hate thing with him.
Every animal has their own personality.
My wife did say he makes her laugh more than he makes her cuss. So they're getting closer, but our female was definitely my wifes dog.

A tabby is a good companion cat or a Siamese cat. I know if I lose a pet I want a new one just for the companionship
