Anybody have experience with composite decking like Trex or Veranda? I am not concerned about the installation...anybody had this type of product over a long period of time, and how does it hold up? Does it get too hot to be comfortable on during the summer? We are trying to decide if we want a brick patio or composite patio. Wood is not in the mix.

i installed a deck using trex for my grandparents spa about 5 years ago, its faded maybe 5-10% but over all its appearance is near like the day i installed it.  as for the heat, if i can recall it doesnt heat up really.

I built a 500 square foot deck from trex at my last house. It was wonderful. My only complaint is that it was a bit springy. I should have set the joysts at 12" on center instead of 18".

Trex is also heavier than wood. In direct sunlight, it does get hotter as well. That was a minus in the summer but a big plus in the late fall afternoons.

I work in a lumber yard and have loaded thousands and thousands of lbs of TREX LUMBER by hand and forklift. I have only seen the side touching the ground fade. It was also there all summer through rain and a good sun bath. It does get kind of hot, but it has never been too hot to handle.

So in conclusion, as long as it is not resting on the ground it should look great for a long time. It gets warm, but it's nothing like walking on the hot sand at the beach.

agreeded on the hotter than wood  thing, but than brick, i would say no(our brick in the back yard would get hot enough to burn your feet.    the trex is tollerable.

oh and a +1 to the springy comment also.

Yep, it is pretty springy. I don't like it for just that reason.

Check out TimberTech tongue and groove, it is not springy at all.

Also, all fasteners are hidden, looks much cleaner.

composite decking is the only way to go for decks?
no rot
it is COOLER than wood
weathers to a nice gray
can be stained if you want
not that more than wood
no warping or spltting
no maintance
increases property value much more than wood

as to which is the best, BOARDWALK by certainteed is absolutely the best on the market!
i've had it for 6 yrs and it just gets better w/ age.

hope this helps.

I have composite. This is my 1st summer with it.

LIKES: - Oviously maintainence is front & center here. I like being able hose it down & swipe it by puting a big ol towel down using my foot to wipe the higher traffic areas. BAM! looks great. Towel won't snag on splinters or popped up nails. Clean up is real quick and will look great.

- As somebody mentioned before,..."PROPERTY VALUE".

- No exposed screw heads that you have to worry about loosening and gouging somebody's foot. No splinters to worry about either.

- Personally, when you have nice accent lighting, the surface of the composite gives a real nice reflection that I've never seen with slightly aged decks. very nice!

- Suprisingly not the ice skating rink you'd think it would be when wet. Although, doggy won't think so.

DISLIKES: If ya have some noobs put it together, you're likely to get some springy boards. You can always just put in a couple of wood screws if its that annoying.

- Tread on that thing at your own perrel when there's snow on it. YIKES, VERY SLIPPERY!

- A little slippery for doggy. (mind you my lab is in full sprint as soon as my sliding door opens to the deck. nothing some outdoor through mats won't solve). She walks around on it quite causualy otherwise.

- LOUD. Twice as loud as a regular deck it seems. Maybe just a little hollow sounding. but still feels very solid.

Hope that helps
