| Ok, so one thing I am lacking is knowledge in lube vs cleaning. Now, I use the Breakfree CLP, mostly because it cleans and lubes. Now when it comes to lube there are so many options from Mobile 1 to froglube etc. But what are people using for cleaning. The only stuff I ever used before I started using CLP was the Hoppes stuff that comes in the cleaning kits. Is there a better all in one than CLP? I was thinking that switching to a set cleaner and then a set lube it might save some money and perform better. I have heard plenty of people saying the CLP "does it all but just doesn't do it well" |

I use Hoppes to clean because it's better at removing copper and powder fouling. I use Breakfree CLP to lubricate and as a rust preventer. You can clean a gun to the point patches come off it white as a sheet, then leave a light film of CLP on it and come back in a couple of weeks. When you pass a patch over the metal again the CLP will show you how it slowly wicks carbon deposits out of your gun metal. I have had consistently good results with CLP.
If you like Breakfree but want a better gun oil for lubrication/rust protectant without the solvent in it, get Breakfree LP. |

Yea my guns sit in the safe a lot more than I would like and it seems like the CLP does a great job at leaving a film of oil on them. I might have to check out the Breakfree LP. What kind of Hoppes do you use? |

When I have to clean it?
Carburetor or brake cleaner; however, I don't thoroughly clean mine until carbon buildup gets bad. Usually after 700-1000 rounds or so. Otherwise; field strip, lube with Mobil 1 10W-40 synthetic, bore-snake it and put it back together. Either that or I'll forget to and put it up anyway. |
| I have been having good luck with PB Blaster, but haven't used it a lot. It does well to remove fresh carbon, but has to sit a bit for caked and baked stuff. I have heard it works really well for removing crusty barrel residue, as it somehow manages to creep under deposits and break them up. I don't let my weapons get that bad... It seems to be a better cleaner than lube, but it might do in a pinch. It's very lightweight, and a little drop will spread out everywhere. |

they say its a clp but I still use hoppes in the barrel

Like a 3 in one shop tool, CLP does 3 things ok but does not excel at any of them.
For cleaning I like a dedicated cleaner such as Eds Red or Shooters Choice. I have also had good luck with Tetra Copper Remover. Lubrication: if it slides grease it with Magnalube or similar synthetic, if it rotates Tetra or MobileOne oil gets the nod typically. I have found most AR's like oil on the BCG. The one place I really like CLP is "ArmorAll for guns". It really seems to feed a finish pretty well without being excessively oily. Take a 1" paintbrush and cut the bristles to 1/2 length. Dab on the CLP then brush it in. If you have a compressor give it a good blastola. |
| I've gone to M-Pro 7. I was using CLP at first because it was what I used in the .mil. I tried Gunzilla and loved it but it seemed to kinda evaporate if left on too long. I decided to try M-Pro 7 then and I've been hooked ever since. The cleaner works well, and the gun oil seems to do a good job keeping stuff lubed. |

I've been real impressed with their products. Nontoxic and no smell. |

I don't even think I have any true gun cleaners/lube around. |

A couple of OLD threads of a member's tests on popular oils/rust preventers:

| I used to use Breakfree but I noticed when I moved back to Utah it seemed to evaporate a bit too quickly. I stumbled upon Rand CLP somewhere on the net and figured I'd give it a whirl. Keep in mind I use this on a rifle that exclusively eats surplus (corrosive primed) 7N6. I've been pretty happy so far. Seems like it's cut through carbon buildup a bit better, and so far I haven't seen it completely evaporate like Breakfree did. It's also not as runny, and stays where I put it. |

CLP is great for cutting powder residue and lubrication/rust prevention, but occasionally you're gonna want to clean out the copper fouling...and CLP isn't great at that. Robla Solo Mil by Ballistol works pretty well on copper and lead fouling. Butch's Bore Shine also works pretty good on copper. I finish off everything with CLP. YMMV |

I have used WD-40 for about 50 years with excellent results. It is a great solvent for cleaning a firearm.
I use a half and half mixture of Shooter's Choice and Kroil for removing cooper deposits from the bore. I use any good lubricant for lubrication. More here: Cleaning a Rifle Barrel |

Kroil works well as a cleaner. My version of Ed's Red: 50/50 mix of synthetic ATF and Kroil. Never needed anything else. Now that I just used up the last of a bunch I made +20 years ago, I think this time I'll just mix 50/50 syn ATF and standard penetrate from any auto store/Wally world. Screw ordering something special. |
