my buddy just ordered a dell that was very, very beefy for only $566 shipped it was a vostro 400 - core 2 duo 6550, dual hard discs for RAID 1, etc - i could've had it down to the $400 range if i took away some horsepower long story short, you can hit the coupon sites like couponmountain.com and find a dell coupon, and then price exactly what you want |
I have a relative that has a small business. They ordered a computer from Dell's small business division that was very INEXPENSIVE. It really surprised me how inexpensive it was. Now I"m not a Dell fan at all! So I offered to set it up for them, with one exception: that they purchase and allow me to install System Mechanic 7 Professional. Since they ordered thru Dells small business branch, you get much better customer service. Real Americans, speaking good english, and pretty good service, considering just how large the company is, and how many customers they have to deal with daily. I had to call CS a couple of times during set-up, and other than having to wait on the phone for awhile, it wasn't a negative experience at all. It's been running absolutely trouble free for several months now, runs very well, and it's fast too. However, here's the key as to why it's been trouble free, and that's the installation of the System Mechanic 7 Professional. Right out of the box when I was setting this computer up, System Mechanic 7 Pro found over 100 problems, and corrected every one of them. The problems were scattered all over the place, everything from broken shortcuts, registry errors, incomplete, and incorrect set-up, and on, and on, etc. The point here being if I hadn't installed the SM 7 Pro, this thing had so many problems, I don't think I could have ever got it set up, and running without big problems. For those not familiar with SM 7 Pro, it's a feature laden utility piece of software that detects problems, repairs those problems, keeping the computer operating at maximum effiency and speed, and it also comes with a one year subscription to Iolo's AV, and a very good firewall. They also allow you to install it on 3 computers. You can regularly find it on sale for $39.95, which IMHO is a hell of a buy to keep your computer running to max. effiency and speed. It's also very user friendly, both on set-up, and regular maintainence. I've been using it on my own personal computer for over a year, and have had ZERO problems with the computer, and it's just as fast now, as when it was new. My relatives have also have not had to use Dell's customer service, as the SM 7 Pro has kept it running flawlessly. So, the moral of this story IMO is, I'm no longer afraid, or skeptical of buying an inexpensive computer (even a Dell) as long as it has SM 7 Pro installed. You might want to give it a try on your new system. I don't think you'll be sorry as it takes away your computer problems, and you don't have to screw around trying to "fix" it, or pay someone to fix it for you. Just one service call pays for the software, so for me and my relative with the inexpensive Dell, it's been a HUGE win-win! OTOH, another relative has a Dell without SM 7 Pro installed, and there's always something negative going on with it. It's so slow to boot, and run you can fix, and eat lunch waiting on this thing to coming up to it's terribly slow speed. Some people are afraid of software utility programs that can access, and correct registry problems. That's not a concern with this product. Read the reviews if you don't believe me. |

Swing by Wallyworld. I've seen some killer HP and Dell deals there. $348 at Wallyworld, for example. |

A couple of years ago my roomate had his ex repo his CPU. He goes on ebay, and gets a tower for under $100. Maybe even $50. Came with keyboard and mouse. IIRC, it was a P3. I figured there was no fucking way it would be anywhere near functional. We installed XP on it, and the thing ran like a top. |
