What was/is the purpose of a "Proof of Life" statement? I didn't understand that part..

So the other party is assured that the hostage-takers have something to negotiate with.  Are you going to take the word of somebody who takes hostages?  Would you grant them any ransom or concessions if you didn't know whether the hostage was alive or not?

Agreed,  Proof of life means show us proof that the hostage is alive before we begin to negotiate.

Ok..I'm still lost..Other party? Who views the tape if they're held hostage? Why would they need a tape? If they are captured, obviously they bad guys will parade the guys in front of the camera anyway? What am I missing here?

I'm retarded today..You'll have to excuse me

OK, if YOU go into bad guy territory and get captured.

YOU would provide your captors with your "proof of life" statement.

The guys who sent you would then match that against the one on video record for authenticity.

It is to ensure they didn't just parade you in front of their cameras and then kill you.

"Proof of Life" is supposed to be given to the party that the hostage takers are demanding ransom FROM.

For example. You kidnap my brother, and call me demanding ransom for his safe return. Before I even start negotiating with you, I want to see proof that he's actually still alive. If he's not, you better pray that the cops find you before I do.
