Call me a dumb ass midwesterner, but what the hell is a Big 5?

It's a sporting goods store.

What the hell is a Piggly-Wiggly?

Edited to add some detail, you dumbass Mid-westerner.

Big 5 is a local sporting goods chain that mostly sells athletic shoes and sports equipment. They are completely unremarkable and of no interest to anyone here except that they have a small gun dept. and pretty good prices.

Piggly's a grocery store?  Big 5 is a western sporting goods chain that happens to sell surplus rifles at decent prices frequently.

Speaking of Big 5 does anyone know what kind of Garands they run on ad about every six weeks or so ?

I think they are Century Garands and I would avoid them.

Piggly Wiggly is more than a grocery store. It is a national landmark. In the south anyway. Never been to a Big 5 though

We don't have Big 5 in NY either. We do have Sports Authority.

I just went to go check out the side by side shotgun they had advertised hoping it was a russian or a stoeger, turned out to be a chinese Century one that you cant even shoot steel shot out of.  Oh well, the search continues.  I did get my Moisin Nagant from them for fifty bucks though.

They have some good C&R stuff and probably in line price wise as to what you see on the web, but I don't like 10 day waiting periods on C&R so I just order from out of state for shipment directly to my home. But I heard some guys say they make the salesman show them 10-20 rifles so they can pick the best, so that has benefit. You can't do that on-line.

DVD- Is your 44 a romanian?  I wanted to get one but the ones lately have looked pretty poor.  Yours looks great.  The gun store in Walnut Creek has a Russian 44 for about $150 and I was tempted as it looked in great shape, but still not sure.  Ugh.  So many guns, so little space in the safe.

Edited for poor grammar.

For C&R Mil-Surps, the great thing about Big 5 is that you can pick and choose.  No Crap shot like the mail order folks.  Were talking about 40 to 100 yr. old stuff. Ads in SGN may describe arms as "like new" "excellent condition"  etc. and they may send junk.  The other thing about big 5 is that prices on most Mil Surps. do eventually go down, however many times prime  guns just disappear.  EX. Swede Mausers, Finn M39's and Enfields.

Big 5 does have good prices on their guns, but stay away from their ammo.  They are really high priced.  Most times I go in their sales clerks tell me to go somewhere else for the ammo, because they know they are over priced.  Their guns are right on though.
