She is pro-school vouchers and school choice. Seems to have been pro-Common Core a few years back, less clear how she feels about how it was implemented. Erik Prince's sister. Thoughts?

Certainly. I am not a supporter—period. I do support high standards, strong accountability, and local control. When Governors such as John Engler, Mike Huckabee, and Mike Pence were driving the conversation on voluntary high standards driven by local voices, it all made sense. Have organizations that I have been a part of supported Common Core? Of course. But that’s not my position. Sometimes it’s not just students who need to do their homework. However, along the way, it got turned into a federalized boondoggle. On one hand, I don't like the way the Devos family got their money very much. A hell of a lot of Amway's fortunes were built on the backs of people in pyramid schemes (AMOs). However, the Prince family legitimately made a great product (die casting machines) and made a pile of money off it. I like Erik Prince too (Hillsdale for the win). If she shows half the competency of her father and brother, she's a great pick. |

A small portion of it does seem to make sense. However, the large majority is BS. Many of our math homework scenarios end up as "this is how they want you to do it; this is how it gets done in the real world." Show the work the way they want it. Check the answer by doing it the easy way. This was supposed to make us "competitive" in the world. Has there been any study to determine just how stupid it has made us? |

So all you folks seeing this as good wamt the feds to raise taxes so they can give out school vouchers? The states fund their education system...the feds supplement with grants but it makes up a small percentage of the funding. The Sec of Ed cannot mandate that the states provide vouchers...she doesn't have that authority. If you want the Dept of Ed to start making vouchers available to people, then you are looking at another huge government program which means more funding and lots of it. Not a good idea!

I missed this announcement, but have been reading a bit about it it today, because my wife mentioned it was causing democrats to cry.
The hand that rocks the cradle is very powerful. The people who created our public school system were very aware of that. It was no accident that it was designed to severely curtail private schools (you pay twice if you send your kids to a private school). A state controlled system would put the benifit of the state in a foremost possition (patriotic indoctrination). Plus the largest provider of private education was (in theory) loyal to the Vatican first, to the State second. But now it appears that public school system is largely hijacked. More and more it pushes a liberal rather than an American agenda. Vouchers level the playing field. Yes they can cost us some of our indoctrination system-but for America that was lost some time ago. --- Anyway, this pick, is a huge proponent of school choice. She makes democrats cry. More win. With all the bullshit I read happening in schools across the nation- Vouchers are the first step to burn it down. fwiw, the charter school she helped found uses aviation to focus an education on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), As part of the normal course of studies, student graduate with their pilots license. Cooler than the arts magnet schools I see public schools doing. |
