Any experience with socks? I have been thinking I would like to get some socks to wear on fire calls now that it's getting colder. What are the nicest and warmest ones out there? Just go with any decent cold weather hiking sock?

get thick wool socks and nylon blend sock liners

I like Thor-Lo's. Good socks. Get a good wool blend and then a good polypropelene liner sock. Always remember cotton kills in cold weather.

jvic: I've never been to the NE USA, but if you want warm feet, shouldn't you start with a warmer set of boots with some insulation such as Thinsalate? Or maybe wear 2 sets of socks winters socks?

Another vote for Thor-lo's. There are some other great brands I've picked up at clothing and sales over the years ( one good thing about Ft Drum is they DO have a good cross section of cold weather clothing for sale at the PX ), but I can't recall the brand names.

Smartwool! Thats all that I use for hiking! Never a blister! But that is just me

+1 Smartwool is what i use everyday. My agencys regs. require no synthetic material. Dont want your socks melting to your feet.

I was thinking about that and figured I might want to stay away from synthetics for that same reason...

I just get the real high ones at Walmart, then wear them until they wear out get 4-6 months a pair

A great many years ago, an acquaintance owned McGregor, which was (perhaps still is) home of the Happy Foot. I have several thousand pairs which are still new in the case.

Another Smartwool wearer here.

If you can find them, buy some mil surplus big, thick, white, wool socks. Kept my feet warm a few times.

I'm split between the wigwams and smartwool socks. The smartwool is a little more comfy.
