I attempted to bake my graphics card in hopes of bringing it back to life. Since BFG Technologies is long gone, it was my only option.
Well one of them fine capacitors decided to fall off during the baking process. I may try to put it back in place and pop in back into the oven, Or try to solder it myself.

I busted a cap off of a Sapphire Radeon card a few years ago. I tried a few places for help/advice. Almost all said that if I didn't have XP with microsurgery on circuits to just bag it. I pitched it. The problems were low temp solder, the precision solder sucker work and the short lead legs on the cap if you don't get a new one. Good luck.. |

It looks like there's enough pad there for you to get an iron on it, at least a tiny bit. Clean, tinned tip, and you'll be in business. Use some solder wick and pull up the excess solder from the pads first, so the terminals of the cap will sit flat. Between lead-free solder and large copper pours on the PCB, you'll need an iron of good wattage. 35 might be enough, but more would not be bad.
That being said... why did the cap come off... what bumped the board? Given that the bump was large enough to pull the cap off, there's a chance that other solder joints are not what they should be. You've got to keep things still when you reflow, man. In any event, solder that cap back on, and see if it works. Shoot, if the rest of the card is functional, it may even work without that cap anyway. |
