This is the set I picked up, but it was in Singapore.  Wouldn't think it is that uncommon though here. Potato pics are best pics .

ETA: This set is fish bone.

My mother spent oodles of money buying the LotR chess set. She will never play chess with it bc it cost so much.

She "learned" to play chess bc Edward taught Bella.

I would like to make one with silver and gold... Where the pieces weigh in around 2 -3 ozs a piece. Not sure what to make the board with.

The theme chess sets are cool but in my opinion the best thing to learn chess on is the good old standard ones. It's less of a distraction and if she is going to read some books on chess, and she probaby will, the pics will be of standard figures.

That being said, my mom picked this hand made chess set up from a thrift shop in beaufort SC in the mid '80s. I tried to play chess with it, but like I said, it disrupted my train of thought.

I had thought about selling it awhile back since I don't use it but with the current atmosphere I might be charged with a hate crime. All these figures are hand carved from wood. I haven't a clue who made them or why.

This group shot represents the figures. The pawns are in the front, the huts are the "rooks". The king and queen are beside the rooks. Very imaginative, I'll give them that.

Close up of the bishops

check out the knights.

Like I said, get a real chess set. Even the cool ones will be a distraction.

She will never play chess with it because theme chess sets are stupid. Nobody ever plays on them.

The board could be brass and stainless steel. I like the thought of nice heavy pieces.

Some of the coolest chess sets I've seen were at my local Renaissance Faire.  Pricey, but they were really nice.  I used to be a chess nerd so I always wanted one of the sets but could never justify the expense.

You should be able to google it and find a ton of good sets.

I agree with that, depending on the design of the set. Some are better than others. I got my boys the Transformers chess set years ago because they really liked it, but it was a mistake. The pawns are easy, but the rest of the pieces are so confusing that we never use it.

A good medieval one would be nice, standard "medieval" themed pieces would be easy to identify i think

For anyone who actually plays chess the standard Staunton tournament set is the only way to go.

http://www.thechessstore.com/product/FSR325R/French-Lardy-Staunton-Chess-Set-in-Rosewood-Boxwood-with-Rosewood-Chess-Board-Box-3-25-King

For collectors?
An Isle of Lewis set.

"This beautiful package includes the Isle of Lewis Chess Set by Studio Anne Carlton with our Black Walnut and Maple Deluxe Chess Board. These chess pieces are replicas of the original which were discovered on the Isle of Lewis off the west coast of Scotland and which are now housed safely and securely in the Museum of London in Edinburgh. Many pieces were discovered and this is a wonderful interpretation of the Isle of Lewis chess set. Recently, this chess set has taken on a new level of popularity thanks to the Harry Potter movie."

I hate to be kind of a downer, but if your kid really is getting into chess you should get her a simple regulation set-up that she can take wherever she wants.

This is geek chic for chessheads.

A cool themed set will be nice for her, but you can't go wrong with a good solid wooden set with hardwood board and timer.  My brother had both. The dragon/theme type will be more for show as there's a lot more going on on the board and hard to define pieces.  We used it once and said F it, back to the hardwood with real looking pieces.

Get her a basic set to start with, a plastic board, and let her play the game. You can always get the "cool" set for a birthday or other special day in her life later. The House of Staunton sets are good, solid pieces and retain their value through many games.

That's neat!

I have a computer chess set. It's not really a computer, it's electronic.

It's a board with the pieces and the board senses where you move it. It has different levels and one of those computer Champs helped program.

I can win playing with other people but even using books I rarely win on level 1.

It's hard to learn chess unless you are playing with others kind of close, or only a little better in skill level.

That there is a great collection for the Blurrygrafx 64.     Other than the virtual boy, the N64 was a low point for Nintendo...do you like them just to be in some kinda weird console counter culture or something?

Do you not have good taste in games?
