I made a good living before 9/11. I then squared away my investments, company stocks, etc. I joined the US Army. I been thinking about buying the rights for a Backyard Burger franchise  after my service to our nation. I think they have a great    theme and a good product. Do you have a franchise in your area? What do you think of the place? What do you think of their Food?

we used to have a few around here (Columbus, OH) but they're gone now. They were OK.

Too expensive for fast food.  Tastes good but I ain't paying $7 for burger in a bag.  My wife complains they always mess up her order (adding jalapenos).

Notwithstanding the above, many folks at my office seem to think it is a good place.  I am a cheap bastard

Open a "Cookout" restaurant.  They were in NC when I was stationed there and were only drive thru.  They kicked ass.  All I think of when I see a Back Yard Burger is how I wish it was a Cook-out.

Cook-Out, a small chain of double lane drive-thru restaurants is synonymous with the words Greensboro & lunch.

They claim "Cooked outdoors style", but in all my times in going to this lovely establishment, I have never seen anyone cooking outside. Is it a conspiracy? Even more questions have to be asked of the High Point road location which is directly across from the dog kennels?

Bark. Bark. Sizzle Sizzle.

But what constitutes "cooked outdoors?" At my house this would generally lead you to believe, that everything would be burnt, smell like lighter fluid, and probably has fallen into the coals a few times and then wiped off before it made its way to your plate.

Its odd when you go to restaurant and notice the beef actually looks like ground beef. Somehow in the madness of American fast food, we've substituted beef with a gray patty of beef like fat. Not so at cook-out, you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between the meat mom used to make.

The best part of Cook-Out is the oddity factor in their menu. Two of my favorites is the "steak style" and "western style" cheese burgers, but many others exist. Unlike other fast food places, instead of just having "a cheeseburger" Cookout offers their burgers in Flavors.

The bad part is its generally messy. Onions in your teeth, A1 on your cheek, and bad, bad, breath that certainly will clear the board room meeting very quickly.

Overall cookout gets a pretty good grade from me. Cheap, Good, and unique. But the one reason that makes Cookout a step above the rest is, that it's the only restaurant where you can order Chili-Cheese Fries, have it come in a foot-long hot dog box, and requires 4 other people to help you finish it.

The price of the products alarms me a little ,but I guess LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION still rings true with a franchise or anything else.......Damn now I'm hungry

We have one nearby.  It's busy most all the time, suprisingly, because it's fairly expensive.  However, there's hardly any other choices close,  except  Runza and Wendy's,  with Runza being the only real competition to BYB.  


ETA:   The food is pretty good, but the burgers are the pre-packaged variety (like what you'd get at the supermarket in the 30 pack, preformed, etc.) .  I prefer fresh made burgers for the price they charge.

We have one locally that has a Micky D's, Wendy's, Arbys Subway and Chinese take out place within a mile. It holds it's own with  it's higher quality food and service.

Their burgers are EXCELLENT...but pricey.

I'd say it depends on how many of them there are where you're at. For example, here we only have one or two Hardee's (aka Carl Jr.'s). They aren't one of the most popular chains (because they only serve burgers pretty much, and because the thickburgers (while good) are expensive).

HOWEVER, they do good business. Why? Because they only have a couple of franchises here.
Back Yard Burger here is the EXACT same. They're pretty much a niche brand, but because we only have one or two of them, they still do good business.

My advice is to pick something popular, but something that hasn't spread to your area yet. Starbucks is HUGE wherever it pops up, Krispy Kreme is big, Popeye's hasn't spread nationwide yet and they seem to be doing well, etc.

I've got other companies in mind but the traditional fast food places want so much for start up fees and have such strict rules and I mean damn I own the place and some corporate fool tells me what to do........BYB doesn't seem to have such strict rules.......................yet?

The food is very good, but expensive for fast food and their service isn't even fast due to each order being made to order.  Maybe that's just the ones in Overland Park, KS, but my experience has been the same each time.

For the price of a lunch @ Backyard Burger, I can get good sandwiches at Chili's, enjoy a sit down restaurant and someone serving me.

I'd recommend you open Chik-Fil-A instead.  I've never seen a Chik-Fil-A do poorly.

I love them... One was around then closed about 8yrs ago (it was awsome)... Another popped up 2-3yrs ago, it isn't as good as before, but a sight better than the other burger chains.

FWIW: The new one has a bit different menu and their cole slaw sucks (I like slaw on my BBQ burger).

Open a Waffle House, license to print money if you can get the franchise and a solid location.

I used to work at a health club and we Had a owner of a Waffle House that came in every morning after work and we could smell that fellow from the time he hit the door.............I know it sounds childish ...........but I don't want to be the person that smells like tastee waffles in the morning at the local health club ..................But then again it was good advertisment ........I'm sure people went to the waffle house afterward

The Blackjack Burger is not too bad. The first time I drove by there and smelled it I had to try it. It smelled great. As for the burgers, I found them a little dry. It beats McDonald's/Burger King but that's not saying much.

I've been told by several people that a ChicFilA is a license to print money, they were managers, and they said that the owner would consider it a bad year if he didn't take in 300,000 a year for doing nothing more than hiring management.

I love Backyard Burger!  One of the few things I love so much, I've thought, Ya know, if I ever invest and buy some stocks, these guys are it.  I eat there about 2-3 times a week, no joke.

Love Backyard!

(I've always found them to be very fast.  The McDonald's around here take 10 minutes in the driveup )  BYB is handing me my order as I pull up to the window 9 times out of 10.

Women have some freaky thing for ChicFila (or however the fuck you spell it)... It is like crack to all the females I know and the one by the Univ is packed, all the time. The place does little for me.

There are two in my extended AO. If I happen to be in that neighborhood when I want to eat, I consider them. One is so poorly laid out that it is a major PIA to even use the drive through.
The other is a decent place and I do eat there on those rare occassions when I am in that part of town.

The Waffle House idea is sound. There are about a 8 or so within 15 miles of my home and all of them are always busy. Even on Christmas day.

Does anyone remember Flakey Jakes? That place was GOOD! You were supposed to order either a 1/3lb or 1/2lb burger and the way you wanted it cooked, then you went to the topping bar and put your own toppings on it.

Decent place to eat in Warner Robins.  The one in Macon is crap as they hire the worst people they can find, which is the majority who live here.  So the food is crap also.  Its all about getting decent employees in those places.

i think because it's always very clean, the staff HAVE to be nice, and it's just more... ritzy a joint than MickeyDs.

Might not be a bad idea. There is a little store near here that sells burgers and beer. Best greasy bun burger in the county for $1.75 each. These folks are making a killing. Best to call in an order at lunch time because the local Texas Instruments and Fisher Control plants will call in orders of 50 to 75 burgers each. Grill opens at 10 and stays busy till they close at 7pm or so.

Add to all that the fact they have sold two huge lotto winners make this place a birds nest on the ground. I long for the days of a local dinner that had chicken fried steak and meatloaf on a plate lunch every day.
