Yes. You can take the ASVAB, DLAB, AFAST, AFOQT, and any other screening test without committing to join. You will want to study hard for the AFAST though, it's not an easy test. Where can I get study guides for then, and how hard is it to get a 90 plus for a someone like myself. I had a 3.5 GPA in school back in the day and are considered to be smarter than most in the brains dept. |

By AFAST, I assume you mean the flight-aptitude test.... Yes, you can... If you are doing a packet for WOFT, they will ensure you are qualified & selected before you swear in... If you fail the flight physical, you will have no obligation to join. |

| I took the FAST test in 1983, scored a 128 (maybe old scoring system?) I had studied anything I could read and got a couple hours in a hobby helo a friends dad had. I passed the physical and aced the board. The person I beat AT EVERY STEP got the appointment because he had some college or so I was told by the O-6. Fuck it, went Airborne Infantry and never looked back. |

I hate to be the bearer of bad news here but...
If you are trying to do the "high school to flight school" path then you are up against some TOUGH competition. There are lots of NCO's who have been in the military for years that apply for that job. Many of them have worked on helicopters for years. To make selection they will look at your packet with your "high score" and then look at an NCO's "high score" plus all the experience of being in the military and having experience with helicopters. Honestly now, who do you think they are going to select? "Hmmm, let's throw out SGT X's packet and take homeboy off the street." GTFO. All bullshit aside, the best way to be a helicopter pilot is to enlist, do you time, (I would highly recommend being an avation mechanic), and then drop a packet after you have a few years experience. MOST of the time, they don't really just take walk-ins to fly their helicopters... And furthermore: If you say if you don't score high enough then "you are not interested" then I will tell you right now the army is not for you. With an attitude like that you will never make selection. You join the army to serve your country. If you want it then work for it. |

Im 28 years old, high school was a decade ago lol. If the Army wants me they are only going to do it on my terms, end of story. The recruiter has better things to do than waste his/her time. Why don't you just go to OCS. I tell you what, get on the phone with MAJ Jackson MacDonald, he is the OIC for AZARNG recruiting. See what he has to say. He was also the OCS commander for a few years. |
