I mailed my tax returns on or about March 1. I have not received a refund.

The "Where's My Refund" tool at irs.gov says it can't tell me anything about my return.

I called the tax line today (800-829-1040). After running the gauntlet of options that almost exclusively take you to a useless computer voice, I found my way to get to an agent. It literally told me "We are busy and cannot help you at this time. Call back tomorrow." CLICK. Not cool.

I'm thinking they never received my return. Should I just send it again?

No, do not mail it again.

Due to Covid-19, the IRS is not processing any paper returns at this time. they have also received so much mail that they aren't processing that they've run out of room in which to store it. from what I've been told, the IRS is having to resort to storing mail in tractor trailers at the various processing centers. They'll get to yours, it's just going to be awhile.

Another enrolled agent checking in.

IRS literally sent everyone home, turned off the lights, and has been putting mail in storage containers.  The backlog is epic and it's not just 1040s either.

It seems e-filed refunds got put on hold until the bulk of the stimulus payments went out.

Talked "just man to man" to a guy at the IRS, and this is the truth. He was pretty straightforward, and not very optimistic.

They're showing up, getting "stamped" with a receipt date, and next truck rolls in next day.

The USPS tracking will show it's been delivered, but the IRS isn't pulling the Certified Mail "green tags" off the envelopes because there's no one at the various facilities to physically process the returns.

After the conversation, I was left with the impression that it may be October before they even get to the paper returns.

There are ALOT of people that are counting on those returns for rent/mortgage/etc... that are truly in a world of hurt.

It's an absolute shitshow, and shows no sign of relenting until the Fed workers go back to work.

I imagine the Taxpayer Advocates are going to be swamped once they really get back to work and they'll stay that way for a LONG time.

You couldn't pay me enough to endure the venom they're going to face when they come back to work.

Efiled mine just before this mess got cranked up.  I owed money and the IRS was pretty quick about hitting my account for payment, 7-8 days if I remember correctly.

Plan your tax year better.  It is much better to end up owing a little at the end of the year than overpaying all year and getting a refund.  The IRS is a lousy savings plan.  Refunds are for idiots.
