My parents have been abroad for two years and are returning in June. They've asked me to go buy them a car. Mom wants a Subaru Outback Wagon. I've heard good reports about people using Costco's Auto Buying program. I don't really have the time or desire to go argue with a bunch of dealers. It sounds like Costco negotiates the prices for each car model and trim, and you can walk in and make the deal. Anyone have any experiences with this? Good, bad or otherwise. (Yes, I know Costco and their politics gets a bad rap on ARFCOM. I don't care. I just wanna buy a car for a good price and be done with it). |
| Used it on the last three cars. You go to the Costoco Website, input what cars you are interested in, and then it'll email the closest dealer that is part of it. They can tell you immediately what the price is, so if you want to bargain at a Non-Costco affiliate you can. You effectively get Fleet pricing plus any discounts (ie Friends and Family discounts, rebates etc). No haggling. In fact I dealt with the Fleet manager all three times. |

I used Costco to buy a car last November. Costco pricing was $2500 off MSRP on a $40K car. I ended up negotiating a $4500 discount with the dealer.
Since I logged the deal on the Costco webpage, Costco sent a $200 gift certificate to be used at the dealer.....an added plus to using Costco |

I checked there and with USAA and ended up with a slightly better quote from dealers through USAA, if you dont want to spend time arguing or even if you do i would check your bank's website/Costco/ and edmunds so you have the most possible info available. usually your local dealer will then match the best price you get among the three, at least they did for me

FWIW, I had intended to use USAA when I bought my last car, but the dealer local to me (at the time) was willing to beat even that. It's a great starting point. You might have less luck if it is a model that is moving quickly. |

All the ones mentioned so far are Zag companies. ie...Truecar.com affiliates. They're all about the same. use it as an idea of where to negotiate from. Spec out what you want and send those specs to several dealers internet people for their best quote. Play a few rounds of "can you do better than this?" Profit. |
