I have mine set up, but ran in to a snag. I bought these:
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B016MF0PHE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1 Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. Troubleshooting them skunked all motivation I had in the project. Reviews on amazon were mixed. I got a junk NES one. No desire to set up SNES. |

Any corded USB controller should work, including Xbox and PS controllers. If you are using a RPi3, you could even use wireless Bluetooth controllers, but that requires more work to get set up. I'll probably end up getting a couple of the Buffalo controllers, but I'm going to test it w/ one my son's XBox controllers. |
