Because I am a nerdy librarian, I decided that my home library needed to be cataloged.  I am using LibraryThing and am no where near done at this point, but I think it will be great once I get everything on there.  Here's my shelf:
Marian's Shelf  Once I get them all in there, I am going to get them in Dewey order.

In addition to cataloging what you have, it is great for reader's advisory and conversations with other book lovers.

Thanks for this link.  I've been needing to catalog my library for quite some time.

Marian, would it be easier for us to just get the Library of Congress catalog number to catalog our books or is the website's advantage the fact that it puts your personal catalog on-line?  I've been entertaining the notion of cataloging my books.  With over 21 filled bookcases, it's getting hard to find a book.

Yes, you are a nerd.  I almost never buy books.  I'll reserve a title through the catalog and have it sent to me.  Since I do acquisitions, among other things, I'll also order good stuff (if I think it will circ - I won't buy something just for myself).

4v50: LibraryThing is nice because it is online and you can probably find a lot of titles already listed and just copy-catalog the entries into your listings.  There are other do-it-yourself cataloging methods available but I have never pursued them.

I think it is just a great way to inventory your books and make them a searchable without getting into all the details of actual cataloging.  I think you could use LOC and do it yourself that way, but I am too lazy to actually deal with LOC.  (I'm a Dewey girl, anyway!)  Also, there are book covers on LibraryThing which is nice when I am searching for a book and can't remember what the heck it looks like.

LibraryThing is also good for finding out about new books.  When you enter in your own title it will show other users who have the book and you can scan their "shelves" to find books of like interest.

Oh, trust me, I don't buy 1/100 of what I read, but I do still have lots of books.  I have tons of autographed books and ARCs that I have on my LibraryThing.  Also, since both my husband and I read lots of non-popular stuff, we have materials that I know our local library would never purchase and aren't available via ILL.  (Think everything published by Paladin Press.)

Now, I need to find the time to finish getting all my stuff on there...

I have been using the book collector software from collectorz.com buy will have to look into this. And I like that I'm not the only one to consider using Dewey at home.

I get so used to being able to find a book easily at work that I get all pissy at home because it isn't in order.  Honestly, I'm only doing this to make my life easier!
