Where I work, we have a Herman Nelson that smokes like an old steam engine and starts spraying sparks out of the exhaust after about 30 seconds in high heat mode. It has a new burner can, since the old one was ran so hot it warped internally. The guy who thought that "burning all the carbon out of it" was a good idea has moved on to greener pastures... This new one has maybe 10 hours of operation. I'm sure that the burner is running too rich, but I have no idea why. I thought that it might be leaking fuel from around the fuel nozzle, but yesterday I put a sealant on the threads and tightened it again, but it is doing the same thing. I believe that the fuel nozzle was replaced with the burner can, but I'm not certain. I know that these have some ass-backwards bored engineer's fever dream inspired method of fuel pressure regulation, and it isn't clear exactly what kind of downstream effect any particular change will have. I might just strip the whole thing down again to clean the burner, as it clearly needs it, but that doesn't address the root cause. Has anyone here seen this problem and actually fixed it? |

I think I found the problem. The threads I sealed are still leaking. I tore the machine down right after testing it and found the sealant puddled up at the bottom of the nozzle. Now to wait until the replacement parts arrive from Winnipeg some time this spring.... |
