Before I get roasted, I know a fire academy should be done in person and be very hands on. Unfortunately, time is not on my side. I work a full-time 48 hour/week job already, a part-time gig, and a busy family life. Looking to see if there are any online or hybrid programs that exist? Specifically ones that would meet firefighter 2 (“240”) requirements in Ohio. Google shows some results but I’m not sure what to make of any of the sites that I’ve seen so far. Any leads would be greatly appreciated! |

@Nate19 Unfortunately you're probably not going to find what you are looking for. During COVID the State allowed some latitude, but that end pretty quickly. There are several programs that offer night/weekend courses. Depending on what part of the State you are in, I might be able to point you in the right direction. Our county is all volunteer, they have a fire academy during weekends in the spring and fall. Our former Cheif used to work for a school that had online curriculum but then had a 2 week, in-person boot camp where skills were tested and graded. You might check with a rural area and see what they do for their department. |

The kid was a badass though with his paramedic patch and tons of experience at 20. Two other guys that came before me that I know of went through school there and were hired on with FWT metro departments. Our former Cheif (career truckie with Crowley) and one of our captains (who is a captain for Colleyville) both worked there on and off. Both of these guys have left the volunteer dept because it’s a revolving door so I haven’t spoken to either of them in a couple years. They were both top notch professionals and outstanding humans who I learned a lot from. |
