OK OK - I know, but I searched on this and didn't see anything, and it's news to me.  Apologies if this is old news/dupe/whatever.

For some reason, Newsweek has decided to start sending me their magazine without my subscribing.  I tend to ignore it as I know it's going to present everything with the usual bias, but tonight, I actually picked up an issue (April 6 - the current one).  On page 6 is an interesting article.

In a nutshell, Hillary Clinton and Eric Holder both brought up an AWB, saying, of course, that it should be re-implemented.  HOWEVER (and here's where I hope this differs from the usual AWB post), the Obama administration told each of them to drop it, and Robert Gibbs (WH press secretary) told the media that he was unaware of "any plans" to push for a new AWB.  Of all people, Nancy Pelosi said that we need to enforce existing laws and brushed off a new AWB.  Additionally, 65 House Dems fired off a letter to Eric Holder telling him to quit it with the ban.

The article cites as the reason a new relationship between the Obama administration and the gun lobby.  It points out that Dems are well aware of what happened to their majority after the '94 AWB, and they aren't anxious for a repeat.  NRA has also doubled its giving to Dems, and Dems (as do all politicians) follow the ol' cashish.

So, my take on this is hopeful, not only because an AWB may not be eminent, but because this might be a bad situation for Obama.  Lots of people had expectations of an AWB under his administration (and felt good about it), but this might be a bit of disillusionment.  That added to more bailouts a-la Bush, ballooning deficits a-la Bush, etc. might be enough to do some damage to the Dem's presence in Congress in '10.  There's also the obvious hypocrisy of lobbyists - and GUN lobbyists at that - influencing the president who promised a lobby-proof White House.  Anything that erodes this guy's image is good in my book.

Touche.  That's a very good point.  Guess I overlooked it in my astonishment over seeing that something the Obama administration said actually makes sense.  And that, of course, would be the point (overlooking what you said, that is)!
