Original Thread:  Back from Philmont Hike. Pics inside

I didn't want to hijack Entropy's thread any more so . . .

Well, after sifting through the web and digging through photos I've found a little more information but seem to have reached a dead end.

I have a photo of our group on top of Baldy and a photo from the top of the Tooth looking down at the Base Camp.  Using treks that traverse both locations and after looking through the itinerary book for 1984 (Philmont Document Archives) I was able to narrow it down to only six possible itineraries:  12, 13, 17, 18, 19, and 21.  However, the two camp names I remember (Black Mountain and Sawmill) are not on any of these plans . . . obviously old age (or perhaps tequila) has addled my mind.

So next step was to call Philmont and see if they could dredge up any information:  no dice.  Talked to three guys there and found out they don't keep records over 3 years and no one can correlate the group photo placard with any particular trek.  Hell, they didn't even know the itinerary books were available online.

Then I happened upon The Philmont Forum.  I posted a message there but given there are only 100 registered users I'm not putting a lot of faith there.

Anyone have any ideas where to go from here?

I had always wanted to go to Philmont, but never quite got around to it.

I even bought the newest, biggest backpack in the 1973 Boy Scout catalog. A Blue Max, also available in red as the Red Max. But Blue Max just sounded cooler. $99 IIRC. Still have it and use it.

But I joined the local camp staff that year and again in '76. After that I started landing real jobs and couldn't seem to get away for a trip to Philmont.

Probably the only thing that resembles a regret in time in scouting.

Here's an itinerary from 1984 rthat has sawmill camp.

It is possible that you went to Sawmill, but did not camp there, as activities are only at the staffed camps.  You could have stayed nearby Sawmill, and went there for 30-06 shooting.

I'll get my map and see what is near sawmill.

Also, they have modified treks in the past due to fire, bears, etc.

You know, it's possible that we didn't stay at Sawmill.  I seem to remember I took a shower there . . . maybe we did only stay over a couple hours and hit the trail after.

I'm going to have to go back to my old Troop and see if they have any records.
