Apparently quite a few phones have tracking apps installed from the factory

you all may want to check yours

The Android developer who raised the ire of a mobile-phone monitoring company last week is on the attack again, producing a video of how the Carrier IQ software secretly installed on millions of mobile phones reports most everything a user does on a phone.

My stock thunderbolt did NOT have Carrier IQ on it

in before lol no phone>apple>android etc......

How do you check for it?

ETA: problem is, I have a droid flipside.  Somewhat different interface.  I ran through my apps list and didn't see anything like what was in the video, but that's assuming the damn phone is showing me everything.

Apparently just look for it in your applications list if you are not rooted

If you are, there is an app put out by the guy bringing this up (iirc) that checks your phone for all this kind of stuff including this....

Its not listed in the apps list on HTC and Samsung phones according to what I read.

Verizon insists that its not on their phones, we'll eventually find out the truth.

Meanwhile, exercise opsec on your smart phone as you ALWAYS should.

Everything you do and say on your phone is recorded, stored somewhere, and will be used against you in court if there is ever an opportunity.

The video shows him pulling it up on an HTC phone - it shows in the app list but, cannot be removed without rooting

My wife and I both don't have it on our Verizon Thunderbolts - we just both got new ones (she was having a problem with hers, girl at Verizon put in for both of us to get new ones for some reason )

I'm booting them both now to see if it is on these, my sister (HTC evo 2 on Verizon) also doesn't see it....

part in red is 100% true and should always be heeded....

and looks like iphone isn't immune to this either. I don't know iphones so someone else can chime in on that

To date, the user tracking controversy surrounding Carrier IQ has focused primarily on Android, but today details are surfacing that the company also may have hooks intoApple's iOS. Well-known iPhone hacker Chpwn tweeted today that versions at least as recent as iPhone OS 3.1.3 contained references to Carrier IQ.

it's been reported on BBs also - not sure how that would work out since they're pretty serious on security.....

About the only way it could be done on a BB is if the carrier installed it. Very easy to get around, I always wipe my BB when i get it new and install the generic image from Blackberry. No carrier added crap, nor any chance of pre-installed spyware. I suppose you could do the same with a android but you would have to root it first, then trust the third party image you used, not exactly full proof.

agree - I do like how BB's make that easy.... I just don't like the form they have, not for me.

I have my android rooted and made sure nothing is on there, though Verizon has said 100% that none of their phones have it on....  The program is definitely carrier installed

I agree, phones are personal choice. With the BB stuff I may lose on apps but for me the fact that they just work is what I need. I do love my new Torch 9850 and I am looking forward to the next gen Blackberry's with the ability to run Android apps among others.
