Good song. Some people think it's anti-military, but I always thought they were trying to be sympathetic to Soldiers who cam back from Nam.

Is the lead singer still trying to kick heroin? Last I heard he was in rehab for like  the 15th time.

The lead singer is trying to kick decomposition at the moment... Seeing that he's dead and all.

Staley died back in 2002.

he was decomposed when they finally found him.

they were unable to use dental records for ID due to his mouth rotting out completely before death due to malnutrition of being a junkie..

this was a few years after his longtime girlfriend had died of AIDS. he went down hill from there.. i imagine he probably had it too..

i saw pics a few years after it happened..IT WAS BRUTAL..

Rooster was written about a dad of jerry cantrells friend, around Boggy Depot Ok (ATOKA, OK) ..who was a veteran of the Vietnam War.

that was a awesome band..Staley had a voice that could WHAIL, especially for a little guy.

Couldn't ever kick that heroin habit.

Incredible talent but you can hear the sadness and depression in his voice.

He was in his apartment for a couple weeks before they found him.

no no, the song was about Cantrells dad, did you notice the part in the music vid where the name CANTRELL was on the name tape?  It was basically him helping his dad work through some of those memories from the war and also help him with his relationship with his dad.

Ooops, my bad. I was never a huge fan, I just liked that one song. Was it heroin that killed him?

yup,
he was getting bad enough that he made an appearance (think it was about 6 months before he died) at a concert here(Lollopalooza in Bremerton??) and wore a hockey mask so no one would see his emaciated face.

He knew he was headed down hill but couldn't throw that monkey off his back.

I was in rehab with a couple of hardcorp heroin junkies. I don't have much pity for addicts, even though I am one, but I felt sorry for those folks trying to detox from smack. Absolutely fucking brutal.

One girl was so far gone she had open sores all over her body. Arms, legs, face, torso. Every time she got up from her chair, bloody band-aids would fall off of her. She was in exquisite pain the whole time. She was only 23 years old, but she looked 50.

She died from an overdose less than a week after being released from the hospital.

As a slight aside- does anyone know the names of the AIC side projects? I believe that one was called Mad Season, but I have heard that there are more. Anyone?

As someone who works with drug addicts/seekers (same to me) daily I can't give a shit.
They take up too many resources that could be used on better, stronger, more useful people.

Jerry Cantrell has been touring on his own for quite a while.  Still puts on a hell of a show too.  The surviving band members (Cantrell, Inez, and Kinney) have gotten back together for special one off event concerts, and a few European festivals.  Replacment lead singers have included, Pat Lachman (Damageplan), Wes Scantillin (Puddle of Mudd), Manyard James Keenan (Tool), Anne Wilson (Heart), Phil Anselmo (Pantera), and William DuVall (Comes with the Fall).

Though William DuVall seems to be the current lead singer, don't expect to see another Alice In Chains albulm.  If they do cut an albulm, it will probably be under another band name, even though 3/4 of the band will be Alice In Chains.

Awesome band though!

I believe this is correct.

I loved that band....In fact I just watched the MTV Unplugged Concert on DVD Friday night. Staley came out with a long sleeve shirt gloves and dark shades on. Obviously trying to hide the track marks. He did take off the glasses at one point and wow....he was definitely using.

All a shame....he was an awesome talent .

Yep, was about Cantrell's father: link

"Rooster" is a popular single by the grunge group Alice in Chains. The single came out in 1993 and is featured on their second official full-length album Dirt. The song was written for guitarist Jerry Cantrell's father, who served in the Vietnam War.

The music video featured brutality and violence visually reminiscent of Apocalypse Now.

I loved Alice In Chains, in fact the rigntone on my cellphone right now is Man In The Box.  Too bad Staley was an addict and died the way he did.  There was so much more potential there compared to others.  I think the music video is a mixture of Platoon and FMJ than Apocalypse Now.

Jerry Cantrell is still alive; it was Layne Staley that expired. Too fast for me.

AIC was an amazing, unique band. I still listen to their albums on a regular basis. Both Layne and Jerry were awesome musicians. It's sad that Layne couldn't kick that heroin habit - I would have love for them to put out more albums.

I was an AIC fan from the time Facelift came out. They are one of my all time favorite bands and Staley was an amazing talent. I saw them open for Metallica in '94 and they put on an awesome show.

AIC was one of the first "new" bands that I listened to since the death of rock. Some of the old dinosaur bands can still crank it out but a bunch of 50 and 60 year old guys can only go so far. The new rock talent got crush under the urban hip-hop and rap wave so there was/is darn little new talent which still appealed to me. AIC was a breath of fresh air too bad that the idiot burned out so damn fast ...

I remember them BEFORE Facelift.  Used to see flyers all over Everett and would think what a funny name!?!

Best friend remembers seeing them at a house party in North Seattle.  Those where the days!  Great Rock everywhere you turned!

Damned faulty furniture.  You would think a coffee table could handle the impact of a flying 185lb guy.

No, basically one of the band members' father served in vietnam.  He had some issues because of this and he wound up being hard on his son, which strained their relationship a bit.  But, as part of the process of him and his father healing that relationship and helping his father deal with his memories from the war they worked on this song and music video together.

The people you want to overdose on drugs never would. Motley Crue would never overdose! You could put them in a room with two tons of crack and they would come out a half hour later screaming, "Rock on!"
      "Shit, they're still alive."
Unfortunately bands like the Crue and the New Kids on the Block would never overdose.

One of my favorite bands, AIC and Soundgarden are definitely the best bands of the 90's.   Just a great band, very dark music but they were completely unique in the way they arranged their vocals, absolutely no one had that kind of sound.

Pretty much sucked that Layne could not kick smack, many of the songs on Dirt, you can tell the despair in his voice about the the drug.  A damn waste of God given talent, right down the toilet.

I use "Them Bones" as my ringtone.
