Anyone on here do any ABC work, or know anything about it? My state ABC has an Investigators opening assigned to the county I currently live and work in. Just looking for any info. such as, do you like it, what do you like/dislike, how interesting is it? Etc. They are also tasked with teen tobbacco and they are supposed to be getting gameing issuses also. Thanks in advance. |

I never worked for the ABC but did work with some agents. Most of the time they conduct compliance inspections on bars and retail. Sometimes they did stings for underage etc. But here they also worked narcotics. They seemed to enjoy their work from what I could tell. |
| I have worked with a few here and mostly they do underage alcohol buy stings. We only have two in this county , but have over 450 alcohol licenses. They stay busy. They also serve at the pleasure of the States Attorney in any other investigation. The down side is that if the S/A does not get elected every four years they could be looking for a new job. The good side is the pay and benefits. |

Sink, are they an enforcement agency? Here in NY we have a State Liquor Authority, which regulates the bars/clubs and issues liquor licenses. They have investigators but they don't do any criminal enforcement, if they observe violations, they simply have an SLA hearing in front of an administrative judge that will either impose a fine, or revoke the license. Criminal enforcement here (NYC) is done by the NYPD's Vice division. I worked there for six months, and we enforced the ABC laws, gambling, tobacco, and prostitution. Personally I wasn't really too thrilled about the ABC enforcement, but that's because I spend a decent amount of time in bars, and felt that a lot of the summonses we were giving out were for nonsense. The good part of that kind of work is that if you have a bar that has a lot of problems (shootings, stabbings, etc) you can really go in there and bang them and when they start to see how much its gonna cost them, they start to run a tighter ship. A couple of other things you should consider is do you enjoy working nights? That is mostly when you'll be working, and also if its the county you live in, will you be doing enforcement at any places you like to spend time in? |
